It's really enjoyable to read such a book that could be a paradigm bender for our medical understanding and future preventive health care system. My comments are mainly confined to "Avicenna's Medicine" and not the original book of Avicenna. "Avicenna's Medicine" gives a lucid and accurate understanding of the holistic Greco-Arabic medical system (known as Unani Tibb) that has enabled physicians in the Levant and beyond to diagnose and treat patients over thousands of years.
Given the authors' academic background and experience as well as their knowledge of Arabic, they succeeded to accurately translate the first volume of the Cannon of Medicine from Medieval Arabic into English. They used modern medical terminology and included commentaries and explanations that made the original text understandable. The book starts with a preface, an introduction, and a premier that explains the conceptual framework that Avicenna used in the Cannon. This definitely was not an easy task since the original Arabic text of Avicenna is not easy to read or to grasp its conceptual framework.
The medical system of Avicenna has deep roots in ancient Greece and in the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Mesopotamia. It is a system that withstood the test of time and was refined by many generations of physicians. It took someone with the extraordinary skills like Avicenna to finally document it in his comprehensive book the "Cannon of Medicine", adding his own experience and interpretations. The authors of the current book have made a remarkable effort to explain this system.
