As I was first looking to learn about CDA, I quickly saw that the resources were limited to help me learn. So I picked up a copy of this book and found it quite helpful.

Keith Boone is a well-respected expert in this space... he's an active part of creating and evolving HL7 and related standards, active on many forums and projects related to CDA, runs a very respected blog on healthcare interop topics, etc. So, a book from Keith is about as "authoritative" as it gets - and it's very nice that he was able to take the time to produce this book for the (growing) CDA implementer community.

The book itself is good, but not great. Tends more towards "reference" than "tutorial". Could use a lot more examples (this is true of everything "out there" on CDA and C-CDA today, in my view) and practical guidance.

As other reviewers have noted, there are a lot of typos (and/or grammatical issues) that a good several hour proof-reading session by an editor would have caught. I counted over 50 such issues. Few are substantive, just a minor annoyance as you read (depends how sensitive you are to that stuff - I am more sensitive than most). Keith maintains an "errata" area for the book on his blog, but it's minimal relative to the actual number of issues I found.

I think the main issue in covering CDA in book format is that the world of CDA is continually evolving. Today, the primary implementation guide derived from CDA (and required for Meaningful Use 2014 Edition) is Consolidated CDA (C-CDA) which is not explicitly addressed in this book. CDA R3 is also on the horizon (some references to it in the book).

From Publishers Weekly

An engaging nonfiction "medical mystery" starts with the strange case of an Italian family whose members, upon reaching a certain age, succumb to a sort of sleeping disorder that causes not only insomnia but certain death. The cause of this disease is determined to be prions—infectious agents derived from proteins, not viruses—so Max explores other prion diseases, such as mad cow disease and kuru, and delves into the history of prion research as a way of unraveling the mysteries behind the disease that's been plaguing the titular family for generations. Gardner lets the material do most of the heavy lifting by narrating in a plain, unadorned style that keeps his own contributions to the narrative minimal, the auditory equivalent of transparent prose. The pacing and fascinating subject matter keep the listener fully engaged throughout, resulting in an audiobook that will certainly be no cure for insomnia. In fact, it might even warrant an advisory warning: side effects may include sleepless nights, caused by a strong desire to get to the next chapter.

From The New Yorker

Beginning with the story of an Italian clan whose members die of a mysterious inability to sleep, Max traces science's tortuous path toward understanding prion diseases—a category that includes scrapie in sheep, B.S.E. in cows, and kuru, a disease spread by cannibalism which decimated one New Guinean tribe. Victims of fatal familial insomnia lose control of neuromuscular function, existing in a merciless limbo between sleep and wakefulness until they die of exhaustion. For a half century, prion diseases have baffled scientists, because the transmission of illness by proteins, which are non-living, was considered impossible. Max, who suffers from a distantly related neuromuscular disease, narrates recent advances in prion science with engaging clarity. But, as he reflects ruefully, "the neurologist can diagnose you but he can't cure you."

In 1765 a doctor in Venice died of what was labeled "an organic defect of the heart's sack", but he many have been the first recorded victim of a strange disorder passed down to his many descendants into the twenty-first century. It had so many weird symptoms and was so rare that the victims were frequently misdiagnosed, often being dismissed as alcoholics in withdrawal, or as having meningitis, depression, encephalitis, and many other incorrect labels. The symptoms are appalling. The illness strikes adults who have no previous significant medical problems and may have started families of their own. A victim begins to hold up the head stiffly, and then sweats profusely; family members are terrified when these initial symptoms appear, as the others follow inexorably. The pupils contract to pinpoints, the heart goes mad with increased pulse and blood pressure, and sleep becomes impossible, no matter what drugs are used to bring it on. The victim knows what is happening until dementia takes over, followed by a coma and then death in about a year or two after the symptoms began. Nothing at all can be done to stop the progress of the illness, which is passed to one half of each succeeding generation. It is, however, becoming more comprehensible as we learn more about prions, those bad proteins. In _The Family That Couldn't Sleep: A Medical Mystery_ (Random House), D. T. Max has not only told the story of this particular illness, but also of other illnesses that are (or might be) caused by prions. It is a tale full of undeserving victims and flawed heroes, and it tells just how far we are from solving some basic biological riddles.
A prion disease is an illness caused by a protein that has become deformed. A family in Italy suffers from an inherited prion disease called fatal familial insomnia (FFI). The disease usually strikes its victims when they reach their 50s. As one might guess from the name, FFI victims lose the ability to sleep. When the disease first strikes, they perspire, the pupils of their eyes shrink, and they hold their head in a stiff, awkward manner. Eventually, they can no longer walk. In a prolonged exhausted state until death, the patients are completely aware of what is happening to them. The Italian family was once the only known group with fatal familial insomnia. Now, however, there are around 40 families around the world known to have the disease.

The family has shunned publicity as much as possible. However, when they learned that author D. T. Max suffers from a neuromuscular disease that is also related to protein misinformation, family members began to hope that publicity would speed work toward a cure. Research uncovering information about FFI hopefully could help other diseases in which proteins become deformed.

Prion diseases fascinate scientists. They seem to be the only ones that attack in three forms: inherited, infectious and by random chance. Researchers think prions are unique because, although they are proteins, they can infect like viruses and bacteria.

Because it is so difficult to disinfect a prion, experts go to great lengths to avoid contamination. Radiation, boiling and heat won't kill prions. Scientists once opened a human brain afflicted with prion disease after the victim had been dead 20 years, and injected the brain tissue into lab animals. They all died of the disease.

This is IMHO, hands-down the authoritative text on Abnormal Psychology today. We used the 11th edition in my graduate school psychopathology, and I recently purchased this updated edition, with all of the DSM-V changes added. Looking forward to re-reading this text once again. It serves as a "go-to" reference, which I keep on my office desk at all times. One down-side, they no longer publish the "study guide" that accompanied previous editions, wish they would bring that back in future editions.

I must say that nursing informatics doesn't much interest me, so that may bias my review of this book. I'm required to take a course in informatics as part of my BSN. Our professor informed us that this was the only textbook on informatics, which was why we were required to purchase it for the class.

I can hardly keep my eyes open every time I try to read a chapter, it's so dry and abstract. It's not that concepts aren't interesting, they actually are. Use of information systems in nursing and the health sciences, is absolutely the wave of the future. And looking at nurses and "information processors" and "knowledge workers" is creative and useful. But the book seems to try and use lofty academic language, big words, passive voice, and overly formal descriptions to describe simple concepts, making the reading boring and abstract. Also, when new terms are introduced, the authors don't plainly define the terms...They give long winded histories of how the terms are used, how they evolved to their current state, and what someone said about the terms, but they rarely come out and say "this is what we mean by this term". So I find that if I really want to know what a term means, I have to translate it into plain words so that it makes sense.

My professor has the previous (2009) edition and had given us study questions from that edition, without realizing that some of the topics were no longer mentioned in the latest edition. So I got online and looked up some of the answers on google books (previous edition). I was surprised to find many of the same concepts discussed in clearer language, with less wordy definitions. Not sure why you would want to take nice clear writing and muddy it all up, but that's apparently what happened. Maybe it didn't sound academic enough?

Inadequate would be something that just doesn't prepare you well enough. Well, this book is worse than that since it has so many errors. I purchased this book in the PDF version. I am currently studying for the Micro/Path section right now and have only done about 40 of these questions. In just 40 questions I have found NUMEROUS errors and discrepancies. Some of the questions do not even correlate with the answer explanations, while other answers are flat out incorrect.

For instance, there is a question about the ACTH test & Addison's disease. The question is fine and the answer choice is correct, however, the explanation for the answer is completely inaccurate. See below.

39.What does the ACTH stimulation test accomplish?
A.Differentiates between primary and secondary hyperparathyroidism
B.Differentiates between hyper- and hypothyroidism
C.Differentiates between Cushing disease and syndrome
D.Differentiates between primary and secondary Addison disease (correct answer)
E.Differentiates between acromegaly and dwarfism

39.The correct answer is D.
The ACTH stimulation test is used to differentiate between primary and secondary Addison disease. Primary Addison is due to autoimmune, infectious, neoplastic, or hemorrhagic damage to the adrenal cortex. Secondary Addison is caused by a decrease in ACTH from the pituitary gland, thus hypofunction of the adrenal cortex. Thus, the stimulation test is accomplished by administering ACTH exogenously to a suspect patient.

(the above explanation is fine, but when they get to the most important part below, they SWITCH the reasoning!)
If cortisol increases, then primary Addison is suspected (adrenal cortex still functioning).

The successful implementation of health information systems in complex health care organizations ultimately hinges on the receptivity and preparedness of the user. Although the Information Age is well underway, user resistance to information systems is still a valid concern facing the informatics community. This book provides effective management strategies to health care administrators for the productive integration and maintainence of such information systems. The Second Edition covers three main areas: technical skills, project management skills, and organizational and people skills, including the practical implementation strategies necessary to make the system an operational success. The audience for this book consists of health care administrators, CEOs, clinicians, IT developers, librarians, and professors.

I used this textbook with a graudate level class. There has not been a new edition since 2004 or 2005. Conceptually, this text is solid, but it lacks practical examples. Although scholarly sources are cited throughout the text, there is little depth. I will admit that I found one of the author's opinions quite entertaining.
By E. Varga
A great resource and a must read for anyone who wants to be successful in business - and it is particularly useful for those in healthcare information technology.

It includes the anticipated reading related to project management, but the book goes much deeper into analyzing organizational structures, management theory, organizational politics, building consensus, surviving among the "sharks", managing stress, and managing the "altered organization" once the implementation is complete (among other invaluable topics).

I wish this book was on my reading list 10 years ago -- it opened my eyes and delivered several "ah-ha!" moments that continue to inspire and shape my thinking.

This should be a required text for everyone in medicine as well as for anyone who reviews medical articles. As a scientist, I am often dismayed at the poor quality of many of the studies conducted and even more dismayed when a study of poor quality is picked up by the popular press and reported as gospel. Equally disconcerting is when the results of a study are misinterpreted or mis-reported in reviews. I would highly recommend this reference to anyone who regularly reads anything in the medical literature.
    By Janice G. Stevens
The content is a bit uneven, though overall is of very high quality. I just finished re-reading it on my Kindle. For those of you interested in the Kindle version be aware that much of the "boxed" content does not flow i.e. the pagination is poor. I blame the editors for this porr transcription from print to Kindle.

I have six of the seven editions of the Kuby Immunology. It remains the best text book for budding immunologists for both undergrad and graduate level. It is especially useful for those of us working immunologists that find it difficult to keep pace with how rapidly our science is expanding in our level of understanding immunity. With advancements in molecular biology, we are constantly needing to review how we understand the immune system. Kuby is no longer just for undergrads. It also caters nicely for graduates and post-grads as well as it brings in the latest knowledge of immunology in a concise accessible manner for those of us applied immunologists.

This is a good book for a difficult subject (difficult for beginners at least) and I feel it organizes and explains quite well.

I bought this book about 6 months ago, and have thoroughly enjoyed reading it. This book is the most current and comprehensive textbook on dentofacial deformity and orthognathic surgery. It goes beyond the basics of orthognathics, which other general oral surgery textbooks provide. In the past before getting this book, I had to skip around between specific chapters of several different textbooks and articles to get the information I needed. Now it's all in one place.

This comprehensive textbook covers multiple topics, from basic principles and two jaw surgery, to chin/ear/nose/and neck augmentation. The textbook also presents the classic patterns of dentofacial deformity, cleft-orthognathics, and grafting technique; all in a well organized and easy to understand manner.

This textbook has special emphasis on the surgical aspect of dentofacial deformity; as it should, since it's a surgical textbook. In other textbooks, you would be lucky to see only a handful examples of pre/post surgery. In this book, nearly every chapter has multiple detailed photos of patient's pre and post op, with explanations of why and what was done. The author also has step-by-step instructions of surgery, with plenty of illustrations. There are also 45 surgical videos! You can watch this world renowned, duel board certified Plastic and OMFS surgeon actually performing the surgeries he talks about in the book.

This book was a great and invaluable addition to my own personal library.

    Review

Blood, milk, and sperm are often seen as embodying the essence of personhood. But in our time they have become the parts of the body most easily stored and exchanged. Banking on the Body uncovers the remarkable story of how body products have been envisioned as civic resources controlled by medical professionals as well as personal property which might be bought and sold by individuals. Original and deeply researched, this book has real significance for how we balance ever-increasing demands for body parts while still preserving our own human values. (Steven Wilf, author of Law’s Imagined Republic: Popular Politics and Criminal Justice in Revolutionary America)

Swanson presents a compelling examination of the process by which sperm, blood, and human milk came to be both ‘gifts’ and commercial products. Deeply researched and clearly argued, this medical history should be read by anyone concerned with the legal and social consequences of body banking. (Janet Golden, author of Message in a Bottle: The Making of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome)

An important study of the way American society has managed and conceptualized the ‘banking’ and distribution of human body products. Swanson explores the parallel but illuminatingly asymmetrical histories of blood, milk, and reproductive cells to undermine the facile if familiar distinction between gift and commodity that has so polarized policy and ethical discussion in this area. A must read for anyone concerned with the ways in which we make policy and shape practice in contemporary medicine. (Charles E. Rosenberg, author of Our Present Complaint: American Medicine, Then and Now)

Since the 1940s, Swanson argues, body banks for breast milk and blood have been ‘omnipresent,’ while attitudes toward them reflect ‘a medical profession unable to resolve its own conflicting commitments to health care access and to individual responsibility to pay for medical services.’ Swanson leads a fascinating journey to the origins of this muddle: from young Bostonian doctor Fritz Talbot’s search for a wet nurse to help save one of his fragile newborn patients to Dr. Bernard Fantus’s pioneering 1930s blood bank at Cook County Hospital in Chicago to the 1950s use of the blood bank model for the management of sperm that organized a practice extant since the late 1800s. (Publishers Weekly 2014-05-12)

Research made relevant through a storytelling approach.

This renowned text maintains its acclaimed storytelling approach, teaching the science of psychology through an engaging narrative that makes research relevant to students. Drawing upon their extensive experience as researchers and teachers, Elliot Aronson, Tim Wilson, and Robin Akert present the classic research that has driven the field and introduce cutting-edge research that is the future of social psychology. Significantly updated to reflect advances in the discipline, the 8th edition provides a firm foundation for students to build their understanding of this rigorous science in a way that engages and fascinates.

A better teaching and learning experience

This program will provide a better teaching and learning experience— for you and your students. Here’s how:

    • Personalize Learning — The new MyPsychLab delivers proven results in helping students succeed, provides engaging experiences that personalize learning, and comes from a trusted partner with educational expertise and a deep commitment to helping students and instructors achieve their goals.
    • Improve Critical Thinking — The authors emphasize this rigorous science through research examples that encourage students to think twice about their preconceived notions of what social psychology is - and isn’t.
    • Engage Students — Through real-life vignettes, which open each story chapter, and “mini-stories” throughout each chapter, the eighth edition provokes student interest by focusing on real-life examples.
    • Explore Research — The authors present a balance between the latest findings in the field with classic research in social psychology. Noting that some older studies deserve their status as classics and are important cornerstones to the discipline, this text encourages students to experience the continuity and depth of the field versus regarding it as a collection of studies published in the past few years.
    • Support Instructors — This program provides instructors with unbeatable resources, including state-of-the-art PowerPoints embedded with videos, the NEW MyPsychLab with ABC’s What Would You Do videos, an easy to use Instructor’s Manual, a robust test bank, and an online test generator (MyTest). All of these materials may be packaged with the text upon request.

This is probably the best psychology textbook I've read. And I'm a junior psychology major. It is like the author's are just sitting their and telling you about social psychology in a conversation. And not like they are lecturing you.

I got this book for a college course as well and have got to say that it's rather nice. Most of the information is put into student-friendly format/language, and goes into depth of certain topics in this area of expertise.

I'd definitely recommend it for anyone interested in learning about the social aspect to Psychology.

I finished this book during a short vacation and enjoyed it immensely. Dr. Braunwald's life and career are fascinating and inspiring. The sheer breadth and importance of his work in reducing morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases of all types is staggering. And how he was also at the forefront of blending the two formerly separate worlds of research and clinical practice is also fascinating to learn about.

If you are a 'medical person' and care at all about the growth and history of medicine, this is a must read. If you aren't, it's still a great read, but there are a few places where you might get a bit lost in the science, but overall, the writing is very accessible.

Although this king of modern medicine is best known for what he gave to cardiology and medicine, the beginning of his life is equally and absolutely enthralling. His family narrowly escaped the Nazis, were completely uprooted from a comfortable life in Europe, and eventually landed in New York - and had to start anew. The tales that brought them there are enough reason to read this fantastic book, but Lee tells a more complete story of how Braunwald rose to become a legend and how his career ran in parallel with the rise of modern medicine in America. His productivity and workload seemed almost unbelievable, but the book chronicles each step and gives a glimpse into the life of a man who truly knew nothing other than dedication to his passion.
