Laura Berk’s Development Through the Lifespan is relied upon in classrooms worldwide for its clear, engaging writing style, exceptional multicultural and cross-cultural focus, cutting-edge consideration of the interrelationships between heredity and environment, rich examples, and long-standing commitment to presenting the most up-to-date scholarship. This new edition continues to offer students research-based practical applications that they can relate to their personal and professional lives.

Laura Berk, renowned professor and researcher, has revised the text with new pedagogy, a heightened emphasis on the interplay between heredity and environment, and an enhanced focus on many social policy issues, while emphasizing the lifespan perspective throughout. The latest theories and findings in the field are made accessible to students in a manageable and relevant way. Berk’s signature storytelling style invites students to actively learn beside the text’s “characters.” Students are provided with an especially clear and coherent understanding of the sequence and underlying processes of human development, emphasizing the interrelatedness of all domains—physical, cognitive, emotional, social—throughout the text narrative and in special features.

Berk also helps students connect their learning to their personal and professional areas of interest.  Her voice comes through when speaking directly about issues students will face in their future pursuits as parents, educators, health care providers, social workers, and researchers.  As members of a global and diverse human community, students are called to intelligently approach the responsibility of understanding and responding to the needs and concerns of both young and old.

While carefully considering the complexities of human development, Berk presents classic and emerging theories in an especially clear, engaging writing style, with a multitude of research-based, real-world, cross-cultural, and multicultural examples. Strengthening the connections among developmental domains and of theory and research with applications, this edition's extensive revision brings forth the most recent scholarship, representing the changing field of human development.

I'm an instructor having taught Human Growth and Development for 6 years. Our school switched to this book this fall. I found the text hard to read and important theory is lost among endless research references. My nursing students have to reorganize notations in order to prep for the NCLEx with this book. Powerpoints did not highlight theoritical information.

Test bank is cumbersome -- comes in a pdf which is useless if you're trying to create a test for use within you school's online environment. I had to purchase the Adobe pdf converter to create a word document. With no test generator included for instructors, I had to resort to "CUT AND PASTE" to produce a paper exam. You might wonder who uses paper exams -- a lot of colleges do.

The mydevelopment lab comes with an ebook and interactive virtual child, which was a fun tool, but students had a HORRIBLE time logging in and enrolling. NOTE: When a person must "click" 3+ times to get where they want to go--they won't use the product.
By Louise E. Mullins
Has everything you could need to know even at the graduate level, but its a waste of money. Save some money just by the E-book, or pearson my lab code which comes with it.

YA. Arranged thematically, this resource traces the evolution of the constantly changing realm of medicine and makes parallels with other events of the era. Each essay is written by an expert in the field. While there are several references to the bubonic plague (although only under "plague, bubonic" and "black death"), there are no entries for medicine during the Civil War. The Ebola virus is mentioned in the chronology, but it is not discussed within the text. While the concentration is on traditional Western medicine, some alternative forms such as homeopathy and acupuncture are included. Boxed inserts cover related events or diseases. The numerous illustrations and photographs are precisely captioned. In addition to the page citation, the helpful glossary gives the birth and death dates for medical personalities, as well as their nationality and medical specialty.?Claudia Moore, W. T. I decided, given the variation in literature available, to read and review three books on medicine by Roy Porter at once. These are this one, the Cambridge Illustrated History: Medicine the other two are - "The Greatest Benefit of Mankind" and "Gout, the Patrician Maladay". I thought this was the best approach as people might be looking for a reference work to buy and trying to toss up between which one to get and what the advantages and disadvantages of buying one of these would be. Well for the first two of these. I read "Gout" because it offered a view of Porter's work in a more focussed subject in contrast with the two other generalised works. So if you are interested in comparing and contrasting you can read the other reviews on my review page. I've offered some comments on the other two works here in this review though.
The Cambridge History is divided into ten chapters, four of which have been written by Porter himself (he is editor of the whole book). Each chapter is independent of the others and follows one quite broad topic. This means you might read over the same historical period more than one chapter. The subjects include such as 'History of Disease', 'Rise in Medicine', 'Hospitals'
The great advantage of this book over the other two mentioned is that it has been liberally illustrated in both colour and black white pictures. They intersperse the text all the way through - and this sort of socio-medical history very much benefits from this sort of treatment. It provides both support for the text and makes for easy reading. The text itself isn't too bogged down in technically yawnable detail, Porter himself is pretty readable, but at the same time it is not a light-weight work written simply to gratify a tabloid market.

This attractive, newly designed set of Barron's Anatomy Flash Cards makes an ideal study aid for med school students, nursing students, and health care trainees who are preparing for tests. Each card pictures a human body part labeled with its medical name, location in the body, and function. A total of 265 4" x 6" cards show muscles, bones, and organs, and are color coded according to their general function in the human body. An important new feature in this second edition is a related Internet resource that contains electronic color images of each flash card. Students can now connect to Barron's special anatomy Web site and enter a unique code allowing them access to the interactive Web site. Once logged on, students can use the site's interactive technology to test themselves on every detail contained on the cards, and even create playlists of particular systems or areas where they require further study. The cards come boxed with a full-color, anatomically accurate poster that shows the human body and its major parts, as well as a toggle so cards can be pulled out and studied on-the-go. The poster unfolds to size 11 3/4" x 16 1/2".

Barron's anatomy flashcards are nice if you have no other options. However, there are many other options out there. I highly recommend Netter's Anatomy Flash Cards. Netter's drawings are more accurate, more thorough, better presented, and more memorable.

Also, if you were planning on using Barron's online functionality, beware that the site is not functioning. Upon calling Barron's customer support, they state that they are aware of the issues and cannot offer me a fix.

If you already have these cards, you will probably be fine. They will help you learn anatomy, but if you are trying to decide on which cards to buy, just spend a bit more and get the best.

I am a surgery coder and work with several surgeons. I dissect operative reports for accuracy. As anyone who's worked in medicine before knows....different providers call things by different names. So, to help me under the full human anatomy I got the Barron's Anatomy Cards. And I'm glad I did. The illustrations are great. They are detailed and categorized well. Bonus: they come with a free online subscription. The online cards match the paper cards exactly. This is great because it allows you to personalize category groupings. I set up my online cards by specialty which is really handy. The one downside is the text for each card is written on the backside. You have to flip back and forth to identify/read about the structure. My workaround for this is having my online cards up and my paper card in hand so I can look at and read about each structure without the continual flipping.

This book covers all aspects of public health informatics and discusses the creation and management of an information technology infrastructure that is essential in linking state and local organizations in their efforts to gather data for the surveillance and prevention. Public health officials will have to understand basic principles of information resource management in order to make the appropriate technology choices that will guide the future of their organizations. As the major topic at the American Medical Informatics Association's (AMIA) spring congress in 2001, public health has moved into the spotlight, given the importance of implementing a population- based health approach and to addressing chronic health conditions. This book marks the first systematic effort to provide informatics principles and examples of practice in a public health context. In doing so, it clarifies the ways in which newer information technologies will improve individual and community health status. This book's primary purpose is to consolidate key information and promote a strategic approach to information systems and development, making it a resource for use by faculty and students of public health, as well as the practicing public health professional. Chapter highights include: The Governmental and Legislative Context of Informatics; Assessing the Value of Information Systems; Ethics, Information Technology, and Public Health; and Privacy, Confidentiality, and Security. Review questions are featured at the end of every chapter. Aside from its use for public health professionals, the book will be used by schools of public health, clinical and public health nurses and students, schools of social work, allied health, and environmental sciences. Drs. O'Carroll and Yasnoff are public health specialists at the Centers for Disease

The publication of this book has been highly anticipated by many in the emerging field of public health informatics and it does not disappoint. Although seemingly targeted at those new or recently introduced to the discipline, or those "crossing over" from other areas within the broader informatics arena, content is very well-suited for all comers, with sufficient detail to satisfy even those familiar with the many issues detailed in the richly detailed case example chapters.
The breadth of material covered is excellent, making it especially appropriate as an introductory or intermediate text. Of particular interest will be the section of the book on "The Science of Public Health Informatics" which includes particularly fine chapters on information architecture, value assessment, management of personnel and projects, and organizational change. Bill Yasnoff does a particularly good job adding clarity to a muddled domain in a chapter on privacy, confidentiality, and security of Public Health Information. Those readers generally interested in PHI education, or with specific interest in developing training programs for PHI programs or for public health agency personnel would find great value in Janise Richard's chapter on core competencies.
The writing style is generally clear and illustrative, albeit not terribly concise. We have adopted this book as the core text for our graduate-level introductory course in PHI.
By Paul Fu Jr.
Very in depth coverage of PHIs. The book is a little short on algorithms and comprehensive coverage of databases. This book has a place in every Public Health Library and will be definitive for years to come. The second edition should be released in a couple of years.

Something scary is happening to boys today. From kindergarten to college, they are less resilient and less ambitious than they were a mere 20 years ago. Fully one-third of men ages 22 to 34 are still living at home with their parents, about a 100 percent increase in the past 20 years. Boys nationwide are increasingly dropping out of school; fewer are going to college.

Family physician and research psychologist Dr. Leonard Sax argues that a combination of social, cultural, and biological factors, ranging from environmental estrogens to the over-prescription of ADHD drugs, is creating an environment that is literally toxic to boys. Here, he presents his practical solutions, from new ways of controlling boys' use of video games to innovative education reforms.

I heard the first mention of this book on NPR and immediately ordered the book. It arrived just the other day and I sat down and read it through in one sitting, after listening to the author's very articulate discussion about the major factors which are contributing to the fact that boys -AND men - are faring worse than ever. The book is the result of many years of detailed study and research, not just some pop psych book hastily written and thrown out there.

I'll list some of the major points of the book but first I wanted to note some of the things I've observed, all of which the author covered as well. First, personal experience: As a parent of three, I've seen firsthand the changes in the school system in the last 25 years. Our oldest was allowed to walk about his classroom and his personality and inability to sit still for long periods of time was addressed, without meds (this does NOT mean that I think ADD or attention-deficit disorder does not exist but I DO think that in today's world he might well have been defined as ADD instead of having other options first). He loved school and he thrived and does not have ADD. In fact, as time went on, he settled down and became a rather steady, focused student.

As the author of this book has also noticed, there have been some alarming changes in the school system over the years. Kindergarten went from being a "hands-on" place, one that is good for boys, to a place where students were pushed to read, learn by doing worksheets and move away from field trips, exploring the world, meeting people in various professions or just touring a bread factory. This is a MAIN point made by the author, that
boys (and all children) need to "know" things by a combination of book learning and real experience.

In today’s healthcare environment, the real driver is value. Maximizing outcomes and minimizing costs or providing similar outcomes with lower cost in terms of actual numbers or recovery time will dominate our healthcare delivery system. Dr. Jacques Kpodonu’s Manual of Thoracic Endo-Aortic Surgery is a most timely and descriptive work in this burgeoning ?eld. It provides an excellent overview of current technology and techniques, plus the endovascular expert can drill down into the details of the devices and technologies described and signi?cantly enhance their knowledge and perspective. Procedural detail, excellent graphics, pertinent imaging studies, and relevant instruction are the mainstays of this text. The ?rst chapter comprises the key overview and very comprehensively covers the platform – the hybrid OR, the tools, the accessories, and the medium – superb, state-of-the-art imaging modalities required to perform these advanced procedures. The text then moves into more technical details including options and instruction regarding access approaches and potential pitfalls of such. This is followed in en- ing chapters by dissemination of precise information, techniques, and indications for the most popular and utilized grafts including Boston Relay Stent Graft, Cook TX2 Zenith Stent Grafts, as well as the Gore and Medtronic Aortic Stent Grafts.

Over the last five centuries, the development of modern weapons and warfare has created an entirely new set of challenges for practitioners in the field of military medicine. Between Flesh and Steel traces the historical development of military medicine from the Middle Ages to modern times.

Military historian Richard A. Gabriel focuses on three key elements: the modifications in warfare and weapons whose increased killing power radically changed the medical challenges that battle surgeons faced in dealing with casualties, advancements in medical techniques that increased the effectiveness of military medical care, and changes that finally brought about the establishment of military medical care systems in modern times. Other topics include the rise of the military surgeon, the invention of anesthesia, and the emergence of such critical disciplines as military psychiatry and bacteriology. The approach is chronological—century by century and war by war, including Iraq and Afghanistan—and cross-cultural in that it examines developments in all of the major armies of the West: British, French, Russian, German, and American.

Between Flesh and Steel is the most comprehensive book on the market about the evolution of modern military medicine.

The first major portion of this book speaks mostly of technological advances of warfare, and not the treatment of war wounds and injuries. Makes for a slow read for someone who bought the book to read about medical care and really doesn't need a history lesson.
By John Miller
This volume is a well-done survey of military medicine as it evolved in Europe, Russia and the United States. The tables summarizing battle mortality statistics would be useful to anyone establishing context for a particular era. The reader will find a highly readable synopsis of Civil War Union Army mortality and morbidity statistics on pages 163-173. The marked contrasts in field hygiene noted in Chapters 2, 3 and 6 explain much about variance in disease-related mortality across nations. The one thing I would like to have seen, and did not find, was a discussion of the impact of military medicine decisions on medical ethics.

CVT is a must have book. It is very hard to find more informations in other textbooks' chapters that are often 10 pages longer. I consider the last two editions of CVT the foundation of my knowledge and they are (for me) the "20 minutes veterinary consult". The online flaw is the quality of the paper: I would' ve expected something better, more durable

Something scary is happening to boys today. From kindergarten to college, American boys are, on average, less resilient and less ambitious than they were a mere twenty years ago. The gender gap in college attendance and graduation rates has widened dramatically. While Emily is working hard at school and getting A’s, her brother Justin is goofing off. He’s more concerned about getting to the next level in his videogame than about finishing his homework. Now, Dr. Leonard Sax delves into the scientific literature and draws on more than twenty years of clinical experience to explain why boys and young men are failing in school and disengaged at home. He shows how social, cultural, and biological factors have created an environment that is literally toxic to boys. He also presents practical solutions, sharing strategies which educators have found effective in re-engaging these boys at school, as well as handy tips for parents about everything from homework, to videogames, to medication.

I liked these cards a lot, but they are difficult to study from as flash cards because there is so much information on each card. I would use them more as a text book than flash cards.
By Hillary
I bought these cards mainly for Step 1 and I went through all of them once. I thought they were helpful, especially the trees at the beginning of every section that show you how things are divided. These review cards had good information, some of which I thought was a little extra for the boards. If you learned micro well during first year, then the combination of First Aid and UWorld should be sufficient to prepare for Step 1 microbiology. Overall these cards are decent but I would not buy them again. Also one thing to keep in mind is that the information on these cards may be a little too "clinical" for first year microbiology classes. The info is mainly geared towards Step 1.

"Managing the Side Effects of Psychotropic Medications" provides comprehensive, pragmatic information on anticipating and countering adverse drug effects when they occur. Cowritten by a research psychopharmacologist and a consultation-liaison psychiatrist, this book fills a void in the literature, helping mental health practitioners assess the risks and benefits of specific psychotropic medications and undertake strategies for managing adverse effects.

This volume includes a wealth of information relevant to clinical psychiatrists, psychiatric residents, and psychiatric nurses, as well as medical students engaged in a psychiatry rotation. Highlights include: - A review of fundamental concepts from internal medicine relevant to psychopharmacology across all major organ systems affected by antidepressants, antipsychotics, mood stabilizers, stimulants, sedative-hypnotics, and other major psychotropic classes - Practical discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of viable antidote strategies for common adverse drug effects, including weight gain, metabolic dysregulation, sexual dysfunction, sleep disorders, skin rashes, movement disorders, and cognitive disturbances. Readers will understand the scientific rationale and evidence base behind available methods to counteract adverse drug effects - An entire section on vulnerable populations, including children, the medically ill, and older adults, including the special considerations in prescribing and intervening when adverse effects arise - Guidance for managing emergency situations, beginning with how to determine whether such a situation--e.g., allergic reaction or overdose--exists. Easy-to-use tables provide critical information needed to respond rapidly and appropriately to emergency situations including overdoses, neurotoxicities, and systemic reactions - A 25-question, multiple-choice self-assessment that employs a combination of case studies and straightforward questions on mechanisms of action, key symptoms, and medication selection, providing the reader with an effective way to measure learning - A series of appendices that distill complex information into readily-comprehensible form on vital topics including commonly reported adverse effects, common psychotropic drug interactions, resources for practitioners, and rating scales for measuring adverse drug effects.

Most valuable of all, "Managing the Side Effects of Psychotropic Medications "provides concise, bottom-line summary recommendations that synthesize all available empirical and anecdotal information on psychotropic medications. Mental health practitioners will appreciate its comprehensiveness and wise counsel.

Review

“This comprehensive book transforms our understanding of military history by exploring a new dimension as to why armies win or lose in war. The importance of military medicine to an army’s success or failure is a subject that has been largely ignored by military historians until now. Gabriel’s book opens up a new way of thinking about war, one that demonstrates how the mix of culture, politics, and science determines the medical fate of the soldier on the battlefield and thus of armies themselves. It will introduce medical professionals, historians, and general readers to a very different perspective on war, one they need to understand if they wish to fully comprehend how human suffering has influenced the history of conflict.”—John Scott Cowan, principal emeritus, Royal Military College of Canada, and chair, Defence Science Advisory Board of Canada

“Richard Gabriel’s grasp of matters military and medical—amply illuminated by his spirited writing style—brings a novel perspective to centuries of combat. From the dawn of firearms in the fifteenth century to the war in Afghanistan in the twenty-first, this intriguing book is nothing less than a history of Western warfare told from the perspective of the casualties and medics and physicians who treated their wounds. Gabriel has once again given us an outstanding work of military history.”—Michael Robbins, editor, Military History Magazine

“With this latest addition to his already impressive list of books, Richard Gabriel, the most prolific military historian of his generation, writes with his usual insight, eloquence, and attention to detail about an oft-neglected aspect of the history of armed conflict: the development of military medicine and its contributions to the revolution in medical science. In doing so, he has produced what must be regarded as the definitive treatment of the subject, one from which historians, medical practitioners, and general readers will learn much. A very valuable book that is highly recommended.”—Steve Weingartner, coauthor of Faithful Warriors: A Combat Marine Remembers the Pacific War

The Kindle version is frustrating to use due to lack of page numbers. Locations...frustrating. I do not recommend this version. Spend a little more and buy the book.
