I had to buy this book for my nursing courses, and right away you can tell there are problems. I have the 7th ed. and by now, you'd think mistakes would have been eliminated by now. Not only are there glaring mistakes in the NCLEX study questions, I've caught contradictory information in the text as well. Do NOT rely on this as a study tool for the NCLEX.
By SeaAggie
This book is organized in a logical fashion. The chapters are colorful and concise. This makes studying each individual chapter tolerable. However, it is obvious that this book was not carefully edited by somebody with extensive pharmacological knowledge.

This book is filled with obvious inconsistencies and outright errors. The chemistry in the "Fluids and Electrolytes" section was especially horrendous. These errors make it difficult to focus on the rest of text because the reader consistently wonders what other errors exist that are being incorporated into their knowledge base.

If the student has a general understanding of basic pharmacology and chemistry so that they can identify errors when they occur, this book is good reference resource.

Delivering Health Care in America, Sixth Edition is the most current and comprehensive overview of the basic structures and operations of the U.S. health system—from its historical origins and resources, to its individual services, cost, and quality. Using a unique “systems” approach, the text brings together an extraordinary breadth of information into a highly accessible, easy-to-read resource that clarifies the complexities of health care organization and finance while presenting a solid overview of how the various components fit together. While the book maintains its basic structure and layout, the Sixth Edition is nonetheless the most substantive revision ever of this unique text. Because of its far-reaching scope, different aspects of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) are woven throughout all 14 chapters. The reader will find a gradual unfolding of this complex and cumbersome law so it can be slowly digested. Additionally, as U.S. health care can no longer remain isolated from globalization, the authors have added new global perspectives, which the readers will encounter in several chapters. Key Features: - Comprehensive coverage of the ACA and its impact on each aspect of the U.S. health care system woven throughout the book - New “ACA Takeaway” section in each chapter as well as a new Topical Reference Guide to the ACA at the front of the book - Updated tables and figures, current research findings, data from the 2010 census, updates on Healthy People 2020, and more - Detailed coverage of the U.S. health care system in straightforward, reader-friendly language that is appropriate for graduate and undergraduate courses alike

Because the sample doesn't include any of the main sections, there is no way to know this without purchasing. Also I didn't see the CD content available with the kindle edition. Otherwise, it is nice to have this excellent text on kindle/iPad.

Mycelium Running

Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World
Download books file now Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World [Kindle Edition] for everyone book mediafire, rapishare, and mirror link Mycelium Running is a manual for the mycological rescue of the planet. That’s right: growing more mushrooms may be the best thing we can do to save the environment, and in this groundbreaking text from mushroom expert Paul Stamets, you’ll find out how.

The basic science goes like this: Microscopic cells called “mycelium”--the fruit of which are mushrooms--recycle carbon, nitrogen, and other essential elements as they break down plant and animal debris in the creation of rich new soil. What Stamets has discovered is that we can capitalize on mycelium’s digestive power and target it to decompose toxic wastes and pollutants (mycoremediation), catch and reduce silt from streambeds and pathogens from agricultural watersheds (mycofiltration), control insect populations (mycopesticides), and generally enhance the health of our forests and gardens (mycoforestry and myco-gardening).

In this comprehensive guide, you’ll find chapters detailing each of these four exciting branches of what Stamets has coined “mycorestoration,” as well as chapters on the medicinal and nutritional properties of mushrooms, inoculation methods, log and stump culture, and species selection for various environmental purposes. Heavily referenced and beautifully illustrated, this book is destined to be a classic reference for bemushroomed generations to come.

Last summer I attended one of Paul's seminars at Fungi Perfecti. Living near by it was easy to attend however I had absolutely no knowledge of mushrooms other than eating Portobellos et al., and reading a little about the possibility of plugging stumps and logs. In fact, at the seminar I felt a bit out of place amongst all of the others who had particular goals and agendas for being there. I figured a bit of education could help me understand this whole mushroom thing. When I left I was completely blown away by all of the possibilities that mycelium offer and by Fungi Perfecti's excellent presentation of this data. Most all of what Paul and his staff taught in this seminar is in this book.

This fascinating book is a treasure trove of effective low tech methods for 'running mycelium'. Paul describes everything from gardening techniques to soil restoration to health care application using typical gourmet mushrooms (oh what Oyster mushrooms can do) and many other species. As a scientist, he backs his data with reputable references. He also uses language that may be challenging to those not educated in the biological/medical sciences. However, not unlike Dr. Andrew Weil's publications, it is nearly impossible to simplify this type of information without giving all audiences from foresters to backyard gardeners to medical practitioners enough information to help everyone understand how powerful this natural filter in soil is regardless of their educational background.

Mycelium Running has very high quality color photos, detailed 'how tos' anyone can follow and specifics describing the chemistry of this powerful ally in its myriad of uses.
When research biologist Paul Stamets suggests fungi can help save the world, he is absolutely serious. In fact, he contends they can rescue it in several different ways. There are the medicines to be derived from fungi, probably more than we can yet imagine. Fungi for insect pest control. Fungi can absorb and often digest toxics from their environments---toxics as diverse as heavy metals, PCB's, oil spills, and radioactivity. Fungal partnerships can revolutionize our farming methods. And we can heal the ecosystems of damaged forest lands by introducing selected fungal species into those environments. Paul Stamets is one of the visionaries of our time. He is revolutionizing the ways we look at fungi.

This book starts by teaching the basics of mycology. Mycelium are fungal threads that form a network, usually underground. Mushrooms are just their fruiting bodies. Mycelium are so tiny that one cubic inch of soil can contain enough to stretch for 8 miles. But mycelial networks can cover as much as thousands of acres, making certain varieties of fungi the largest organisms in the world, as well as some of the oldest. Fungi build soil by breaking down organic matter, and even cracking apart rocks. Besides that, fungal mycelium enter into symbiotic relationships with trees and other green plants, helping
them get water and nutrients from the wider environment by surrounding and even penetrating the roots.

Paul Stamets believes mycelium are information sharing membranes in their environments. He says they are aware, react to change, have the long term health of their host environment in mind, and devise diverse enzymatic and chemical responses to challenges. He cites research to back up these ideas.

Overall this is a useful book to provide a rapid overview about practical aspects of general endocrinology. It is a great starting point for internal medicine residents and fellows. "Secrets" may not be the right word: it is a good overview of essential practical knowledge about pathophysiology, diagnostic approaches and therapeutic modalities.
The chapters are somewhat uneven in terms of depth: some are quite detailed (e.g. diabetes in pregnancy), others would warrant slightly more detail and updating (as well as elimination of mostly minor errors that could probably be easily be eliminated by a reading by peers).
While this has nothing to do with the content, one very weak point is the size of the print, which is way too small! Many will need a magnifying glass to read the text. The publisher would be well advised to fix this - otherwise it is not worth buying future versions of this book or other "secrets".
By Peter Kopp
I chose this rating because it's a very practical book and updated. It has very concise summaries of the different endocrine pathologies , it is very easy to read with the main questions we want to be answered. It is not a book to go deeper into a subject but that is not the objective of the book. I really recomend it.

I am an outpatient nurse practitioner and purchased this product as a reference guide. It is really comprehensive and helps guide my patient care - I use it dozens of time every day. There are a lot of clinical pearls and so much information right at my fingertips. Compared to other texts and even on-line websites, this is concise, comprehensive, and portable. I highly recommend it and it was well worth the cost.
By OutpatientNP
I bought this after seeing it used in my outpatient clinic by the residents. It's a great reference, good for the fast-paced nature of primary care and even useful on the wards as well. The references were good for my preceptor presentations and short talks on the rotation, and everything was concisely summarized, saving me hours of reading. I used this as my main text for the clerkship and it paid off with an honors (both clinical and on the exam). Much more useful than online sources or textbooks. The main suggestion would be to have this in a PDA to supplement the book.

This lively, practical text presents a fresh and comprehensive approach to doing qualitative research. The book offers a unique balance of theory and clear-cut choices for customizing every phase of a qualitative study. A scholarly mix of classic and contemporary studies from multiple disciplines provides compelling, field-based examples of the full range of qualitative approaches. Readers learn about adaptive ways of designing studies, collecting data, analyzing data, and reporting findings. Key aspects of the researcher's craft are addressed, such as fieldwork options, the five phases of data analysis (with and without using computer-based software), and how to incorporate the researcher's “declarative” and “reflective” selves into a final report.

Ideal for graduate-level courses, the text includes:
* Discussions of ethnography, grounded theory, phenomenology, feminist research, and other approaches.
* Instructions for creating a study bank to get a new study started.
* End-of-chapter exercises and a semester-long, field-based project.
* Quick study boxes, research vignettes, sample studies, and a glossary.
* Previews for sections within chapters, and chapter recaps.
* Discussion of the place of qualitative research among other social science methods, including mixed methods research.

Why can't our political leaders work together as threats loom and problems mount? Why do people so readily assume the worst about the motives of their fellow citizens?

In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong.

Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right. He blends his own research findings with those of anthropologists, historians, and other psychologists to draw a map of the moral domain, and he explains why conservatives can navigate that map more skillfully than can liberals. He then examines the origins of morality, overturning the view that evolution made us fundamentally selfish creatures.

But rather than arguing that we are innately altruistic, he makes a more subtle claim - that we are fundamentally groupish. It is our groupishness, he explains, that leads to our greatest joys, our religious divisions, and our political affiliations. In a stunning final chapter on ideology and civility, Haidt shows what each side is right about, and why we need the insights of liberals, conservatives, and libertarians to flourish as a nation.

I do not exaggerate when I say this is one of the best (nonfiction) books I've read this year. Haidt is a great writer, and has a real knack for explaining a wide variety of things with clarity and wit. Here, Haidt is concerned to walk us through the world of morality and politics, explaining some of the reasons why very smart and good people disagree on such things as the value of equality, authority, tradition, and other thorny topics.

In 2006, Haidt wrote The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom, part of whose thesis was that cognition is primarily based in emotion, with reason coming in after the fact, most often to justify what has already been 'decided' on. Section 1 of this book (one of whose chapters is titled "The Emotional Dog and Its Rational Tail, also the title of an earlier article by Haidt) picks up where Haid's previous book left off. There is evidence from neuroscience (Who's in Charge?: Free Will and the Science of the Brain, behavioral psychology Simple Heuristics That Make Us Smart, and other areas (
I was first introduced to the striking findings of Dr. Jonathan Haidt's research when I heard him speak at a conference on ethics and human research. The combination of his engaging speaking style married to hard data from his psychology experiments was impressive, as was his ability to constructively engage both the liberal and conservative members of the audience. I was intrigued enough to read the book-length version of the lecture, and I was greatly rewarded. Haidt shows how our minds have evolved to make us prone righteous disagreement. He hopes that a better understanding of our predisposition to take uncompromising moral stands can be a starting point to reverse the increased contentiousness of our politics.

Reading Haidt's "The Righteous Mind" was in some ways like taking a college survey course in moral psychology. In particular, the early chapters take a reader through the controversies and the limitation of prior attempts to study the psychological underpinnings of why we think the way we do. Experiments in psychology are accessible and illuminating in ways that other fields can only envy, and Haidt's book is full of absorbing descriptions of the research. Throughout, this book is highly data-driven (it concludes with nineteen pages of references to the scientific literature). What sets it apart is Haidt's ability to weave into the science both his own research and his evolving understanding of his personal moral frameworks. This human element makes the book both accessible and engrossing. Haidt wraps each section of the book around a "central metaphor" and then demonstrates the fascinating studies that validate that metaphor.

Section 1: Central metaphor - Our minds are like a rider on the back of an elephant.

A few reviews have said that this little 141 page text is "dated." Two persepectives:

1. The material covered is timeless. Our understanding of T and B cells will evolve over time, but the basic function, and the ideas of receptor sites, etc. are so fundamental that a few decades here or there cannot possibly subtract from the immense value of this text.

2. Current thinking ("2020") is that we're entering an era of completely recasting the immune system, with as revolutionary a paradigm shift as recombinant DNA itself. One aspect of this is thinking of this system as multiple systems (6 or more in some literature). Another is the role of microRNA (small ds- double stranded RNA) and the epigenomic phenomena of RNA-interference.

These phenomena don't subtract from antibody or cell mediated immunity as models, they ADD to them. For complete coverage of the new models, without spending a fortune or trying to scan a whole large text, see any book or recent article by Dr. Bagasra, including:Immunology and the Quest for an HIV Vaccine: A New Perspective .

That out of the way, when our ClassPros and Library Picks surveys poll med students, THIS little text has come up in the top 5 for over a decade (and the top 1 or 2 in the last 3 years)! How is it possible, with texts of 1,000 pages, that an 8.5 x 11" 141 page, colorful "High School" looking monograph consistently takes these honors?

The answer is the astonishing flow of the metaphors coupled with "aha" pictures and illustrations on every page.

I utilized this text for my microbiology class in undergrad. It lists the major parasites, molds and bacteria. Parasites were the most interesting because it shows you what foods are associated with what parasite. Pretty gross stuff but was not boring at all. I also used:

Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Question and Answers, isbn 0971999635, to help me with test preparation. The questions were quite similar to what I found on my college microbiology tests. Both books helped me to achieve very good scores on my tests.
By Dana B.
The text in this book is fantastic, very clear and concise - easy for a student (like me) to read on their own and get a very clear understanding of. The book covers everything from the discovery of microorganisms to viruses, bacteria, protazoa, prions and the chemistry in cellular metabolism.
Chapter listing:
Microbiology - The Science
Microscopy
Cell Structure and Taxonomy
Diversity of Microorganisms Part 1
Diversity of Microorganisms Part 2
Biochemistry
Microbial Physiology and Genetics
Controlling Microbial Growth in Vitro
Using Antimicrobial Agents to Control Microbial Groth in Vivo
Microbial Ecology
Epidemiology and Public Health
Healthcare Epidemiology: Nosocomial Infections and Infection Control
Diagnosing Infectious Diseases
Pathogens of Infectious Diseases
Nonspecific Host Defense Mechanisms
Specific Host Defense Mechanisms: An Introduction to Immunology
Major Viral, Bacterial, and Fungal Diseases of Humans
Major Parasitic Diseases of Humans: An Introduction to Medical Parasitology

So you can see, this book covers a variety of topics - and is a fantastic introduction to the field of microbiology. The negatives of using this book - if you are a visual learner the diagrams are sub-par at best. Now I'm not talking about the tables, the tables are fantastic. The diagrams are minimal, and not very helpful. I am lucky in that my Micro professor has overheads of the diagrams from a different book that he uses.

Why can’t our political leaders work together as threats loom and problems mount? Why do people so readily assume the worst about the motives of their fellow citizens? In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding.

His starting point is moral intuition—the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. But rather than arguing that we are innately altruistic, he makes a more subtle claim—that we are fundamentally groupish.

This is the first book by a young author from Memphis, Tennessee, and while not without shortcomings, it's a better start than most. Crosby describes some key moments in our fight against this nasty disease, starting with a general overview, moving to the ghastly epidemic that devastated Memphis, then to the scene of the critical triumph in Cuba, and finally to the contemporary world and the potential that yellow fever has for a breakout. Along the way she conveys a good sense of what her home town was like in the 1870s, as well as the hardships faced by the medical staff and volunteers in Cuba. The book is as much a peek into life in some highly stressed places as a medical story.

Crosby's random jumping from scene to scene, however, creates a sense of disjointedness that detracts from the book's interest. One gets the impression that what she really wanted to write was a book about "Memphis," not one about yellow fever. This is entirely fine, and choosing to focus on Memphis as plague city certainly establishes a niche for her product. But how does it connect to the scene in Cuba where the seeds of the fever's defeat are first sown? There have been far more comprehensive treatments of Walter Reed's operation there, and Crosby contributes nothing new and notable, nor does she tie Reed's work strongly back to the subject that is obviously her passion. Quite possibly she felt obliged to include this material simply to make the text long enough to interest a publisher; it's not hard to imagine that her researches had pretty thoroughly mined out the information available on Memphis during the plague years, and it wasn't enough for a stand-alone book.
For as long as we have had illnesses, we have tried to understand them; the earliest of understandings was that some angry deity was sending down punishment for some sort of transgression. It's an explanation that still satisfies many people. Yellow fever could be seen as vengeance direct from God. It was a disease spawned in Africa, and Europeans involved in the slave trade were especially stricken. There is no reason that a yellow fever epidemic has never infested Asia, except that there was no African slave trade there. It infested all of the American colonies, but when the Atlantic slave trade was abolished in the northern states, it went away, continuing in the southern ones. Gods were not involved in the illness, however, or at least their involvement is less direct than the virus that causes the dreadful symptoms and death, or the mosquito that carries the virus. In _The American Plague: The Untold Story of Yellow Fever, the Epidemic That Shaped Our History_ (Berkley), Molly Caldwell Crosby details the ravages of the epidemics, the process by which the disease was brought under some control, and the fears that it might again become a player on the world's pathology stage.

Crosby lives in Memphis, and the first part of her book tells of the epidemic there of 1878. The passages describing the disease within the city's neighborhoods are a combination of Faulkner and Poe. The disease sounds dreadful. The disease had come to Memphis from Havana, borne by the steamer _Emily B. Souder_ up the Mississippi, and starting in July 1878, Memphis residents began dropping; it is a dismal and scary tale. The second half of Crosby's book tells the more familiar story of the eventual understanding of how the disease worked.

How to Use This Book, viii

This book is neither a comprehensive text nor an exam-review tool. It is an overview of the immune system designed to give anyone who is learning immunology a feel for how the system all fits together.

The Anytime, Anywhere Textbook, ix

LECTURE 1 An Overview, 1

The immune system is a “team effort,” involving many different players who work together to provide a powerful defense against invaders. Focusing in on one player at a time makes it hard to understand the game. Here we view the action from the grandstands to get a wide-angle picture of what the immune system is all about.

LECTURE 2 The Innate Immune System, 13

The innate immune system is a “hard-wired” defense that has evolved over millions of years to recognize pathogens that commonly infect humans. It provides a rapid and powerful defense against “everyday” invaders.

LECTURE 3B Cells and Antibodies, 24

B cells and the antibodies they produce are part of the adaptive immune system. This defense evolves during our own lifetime to protect us against invaders that we, personally, have never encountered before.

LECTURE 4The Magic of Antigen Presentation, 38

T cells, another weapon of the adaptive immune system, only recognize invaders which are “properly presented” by specialized antigen presenting cells. This feature keeps these important cells focused on the particular attackers which they are able to defend against.

LECTURE 5T Cell Activation, 52

Before they can spring into action, T cells must be activated. This requirement helps ensure that only useful weapons will be mobilized.

LECTURE 6T Cells at Work, 60

Once they have been activated, helper T cells orchestrate the immune response, and killer T cells destroy infected cells.

LECTURE 7Secondary Lymphoid Organs and Lymphocyte Trafficking, 70

B and T lymphocytes travel through secondary lymphoid organs looking for the invaders they can defend against. Once activated, B and T cells are dispatched to those areas of the body in which they can be most useful.

LECTURE 8Restraining the Immune System, 81

The powerful weapons of the immune system must be restrained lest they become “overexuberant.” In addition, once an invader has been defeated, the immune system must be “reset” to prepare for future attacks.

LECTURE 9Tolerance Induction and MHC Restriction, 86

T cells must be trained to focus on appropriately presented invaders, and B and T lymphocytes must learn not to attack our own bodies.

LECTURE 10Immunological Memory, 96

B and T cells remember invaders we have previously encountered, and respond much more quickly and effectively to a subsequent attack by the same invader.

LECTURE 11Vaccines, 102

Vaccines are used to safely mimic the attack of an invader so that our immune system will be primed and ready for a real attack.

LECTURE 12The Immune System Gone Wrong, 107

The immune system generally does a good job of defending us while infl icting minimal “collateral damage.” Sometimes, however, mistakes are made.

LECTURE 13Immunodeficiency, 116

Serious disease may result when our immune system does not operate at full strength.

LECTURE 14Cancer and the Immune System, 121

Because the immune system is set up to minimize the chance that its weapons will attack our own bodies, it is not very good at defending us against cells that have become cancerous.

LECTURE 15A Critique of the Immune System, 128

The immune system has many strengths – and a few weaknesses.

Before clicking buy, check where the book is shipped from.
I got one that looked copied, It has a "JAYPEE" on the lower left of the the front page.
Paper is darker than what I used to buy from amazon.
So, I was disappointed but they got all the correct information in the textbook.
hopefully, I will pass my psych class.

Wow! I bought this book a couple of months ago, but just got around to opening it up last night to study for a histology test. I expected to find a slew of labelled photomicrographs to review, but this book is actually so much more! It is really an anatomy, physiology and histology text all in one - and it is done very very well.

The book is divided into 24 chapters, with chapters by system, tissue type, basic cell biology as well as tissue/slide preparation. Each chapter covers the anatomy and physiology of the system or tissue in question extremely well. The text gets right to the point, but is still very complete in its explanations. Within each paragraph, key words are bolded in red, so you can quickly find the exact topic you are interested in within a subject. All topics are supplemented with fully labelled light and electron photomicrographs of each structure, tissue and cell. Illustrations also accompany a majority of the micrographs to clarify things.

All illustrations and micrographs are thoroughly labelled. Within text pictures are typically 1/4 to 1/2 page in size, and each chapter has its own set of full-page color plates for even better up-close visualization and study. The full-page color photomicrographs at the end of each chapter are fully labelled, but go even further than that with exact descriptions of each label on the opposing page. This is really amazing, because, for instance, on a slide of the kidney that I was studying, not only were the proximal and distal tubules and collecting ducts labelled, there were also accompanying descriptions on the opposing page as to why one was different from another in these very similar looking structures.
