I ordered this book but WITH the lab codes and guess what? They did not work. If you need the lab codes for your class DO NOT buy from amazon, they are charging you for something that doesn't even work! The book was fine but I ordered it for the lab codes and was more than upset when I had to rebuy the codes for $50.
By justsaying
Whoever thought it was a good idea to make this thick book a softcover, I tell you: it was not. The shear weight of this book, combined with the thin, slippery cover, makes it difficult to hold onto the book. Additionally, for whatever reason, whenever I put this textbook into my messenger bag (a regular messenger bag, nothing special), it always ends up bent and wedged under my other books. It's hard to even pull it out because there's no friction. I try to keep my things nice, but this book was the only one in my possession with dog ears and crinkles after merely one semester of use.

Asides from the obvious issue, this book was very informational and to the point, and it explained difficult aspects of biology in such a simple, succinct manner that I learned more from it than I did in many of my previous textbooks. I know I might be unfair if there is a hardcover available, but if there is not, this book can be a hassle. Get the hardcover.

With so much information on children's health to be found on the Internet, and many other books giving advice on child-rearing, is this reference book worth buying? The answer is yes! Consider the following four upsides of this "Complete and Authoritative Guide... New and Revised Fifth Edition" (per the front cover):

1. IT'S TRUSTWORTHY. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), which according to its Web site represents 60,000 pediatricians, publishes it. Over 100 pediatricians (and 4 dentists) contributed to the book. The information is sound and up-to-date as of 2009. The opinions expressed are "mainstream" (not "fringe"), which is reassuring since child-rearing is stressful.

2. IT'S WIDE-RANGING (and some may go farther in describing it as "complete" or "comprehensive"). Although no book can be all things to all people, it contains important information on many common health and behavior problems, and it gives advice on when problems might be so serious that you should bring the child to a doctor.

3. IT'S RELATIVELY EASY TO READ AND USE. The authors write clearly and concisely. Although some jargon is present (e.g., "flat angiomata"), that is held to a minimum. The organization into Part 1 (pages 1-506, covering normal development and needs chronologically from birth to age 5*) and Part 2 (pages 507-848, covering specific health issues from "Abdominal/Gastrointestinal Tract" to "Emergencies" to "Your Child's Sleep") is logical. You'll find the index quite useful for locating info (but see "B" below). Numerous drawings and text boxes complement the body of the text.

4. IT'S IMPROVED FROM THE FOURTH (2004) EDITION, with 145 more pages.
We asked our nurse practitioner about some advice from The Baby Book: Everything You Need to Know About Your Baby from Birth to Age Two (Revised and Updated Edition) and she warned us that Dr. Sears was out of date, we should buy this book instead. So we did. But I have to say it is disappointing (particularly coming off a well written book like the Sears book). I check this book for "modern updates", but honestly, every time I go to look something up in here, my wife says "It probably won't be in there, try Dr. Sears." Part of the problem is that this book has a poor index. Interested in sleep positions? It's not in the index -- not as sleep position or position sleep, back sleeping or even Back to Sleep (the AAP's campaign to get kids on their back). If you happen to look up SIDS, sleep position is in the text -- just not the index (and if you already know that sleep position is a factor in SIDS, you probably don't need to look it up). If you can read and digest a nearly 900 page book, you will have the information. But I hope you are not in a hurry.

The organization and chapter scopes are also inconsistent. For example, there is good material on reflexes in the section on Growth and Development in the chapter called "The First Month". Although this chapter is supposed to be on the first month, this section talks about some things that last for several months or even years and often without clear indication which time frame is being discussed (note: there are similar chapters for time frames up to five years). Taken literally, the book says that babies in their first month need "a balanced experience of freedom and limits." The first month?

This study guide is a valuable tool for a subject/textbook that is very in-depth and overwhelming with information. However, the Practice Exams in the workbook were extremely disappointing. The answer key did not give answers that were even choices for the corresponding questions (i.e., the answer for #1 (for example) would be "J" but the listed answer choices for #1 were only A, B, C, or D) -- this was repeatedly an issue and did not happen on just one or two questions. It was frustrating to study that hard & put full effort into the questions, then to find out you couldn't even rate how you scored. The outlines provided for the chapters in the study guide were helpful, though, so there is some value to the study guide, but you can also use the FREE online resources that are available on evolve.com (see the textbook for more info) -- that website has sample tests, etc that are really helpful and FREE!! (By the way, I have notified the publisher of their errors in the workbook & have still received absolutely no response. Disappointing.)

Although this book does cover a tremendous amount of information I find it sometimes too wordy in explaining conditions for the purpose of nursing. Prior to studying nursing, I have a b.S in bio and felt I was reading a biochem book. Gave it a 3 stars because the book does have Great pictures and does make a good reference at times. I believe that the explanation can be a bit simpler for each condition then explained in this text.

Other nursing students in my course of 40 hated the book and supplemented with patho made easy.

The Talent Code

The Talent Code: Greatness Isn't Born. It's Grown. Here's How.
Download books file now The Talent Code: Greatness Isn't Born. It's Grown. Here's How. for everyone book with Mediafire Link Download Link What is the secret of talent? How do we unlock it? In this groundbreaking work, journalist and New York Times bestselling author Daniel Coyle provides parents, teachers, coaches, businesspeople—and everyone else—with tools they can use to maximize potential in themselves and others.

Whether you’re coaching soccer or teaching a child to play the piano, writing a novel or trying to improve your golf swing, this revolutionary book shows you how to grow talent by tapping into a newly discovered brain mechanism.

Drawing on cutting-edge neurology and firsthand research gathered on journeys to nine of the world’s talent hotbeds—from the baseball fields of the Caribbean to a classical-music academy in upstate New York—Coyle identifies the three key elements that will allow you to develop your gifts and optimize your performance in sports, art, music, math, or just about anything.

• Deep Practice Everyone knows that practice is a key to success. What everyone doesn’t know is that specific kinds of practice can increase skill up to ten times faster than conventional practice.

• Ignition We all need a little motivation to get started. But what separates truly high achievers from the rest of the pack? A higher level of commitment—call it passion—born out of our deepest unconscious desires and triggered by certain primal cues. Understanding how these signals work can help you ignite passion and catalyze skill development.

• Master Coaching What are the secrets of the world’s most effective teachers, trainers, and coaches? Discover the four virtues that enable these “talent whisperers” to fuel passion, inspire deep practice, and bring out the best in their students.

These three elements work together within your brain to form myelin, a microscopic neural substance that adds vast amounts of speed and accuracy to your movements and thoughts. Scientists have discovered that myelin might just be the holy grail: the foundation of all forms of greatness, from Michelangelo’s to Michael Jordan’s. The good news about myelin is that it isn’t fixed at birth; to the contrary, it grows, and like anything that grows, it can be cultivated and nourished.

Combining revelatory analysis with illuminating examples of regular people who have achieved greatness, this book will not only change the way you think about talent, but equip you to reach your own highest potential.

How do people get good at something? Wait a minute, that's the not the right question, how do people get great at something?

Well, frankly, there has been a significant amount of research on the matter of human performance and the development of skill/talent. Author, Daniel Coyle, has looked at the research and he also went on a road trip to what he calls "talent hotbeds", places where great talent has been produced out of proportion to their size and perceived stature; for example, a Russian tennis club, a music school in Dallas, a soccer field in Brazil, and others.

Coyle shares what he learned in this excellent book, "The Talent Code". The Talent Code covers three basic areas:

1) Deep practice. Practice is important to world-class performance. I guess everyone knew that already, huh? Well, sometimes, it doesn't hurt to remind of everyone of the obvious. What might be a little more helpful is the understanding of "how" to practice. What constitutes "deep practice"? This is the kind of practice that separates the great from the not-so-great.

The understanding of "deep practice" involves an understanding of a substance called "myelin". Myelin is the insulation that wraps around nerve fibers. According to Coyle, myelin turns out to be a very big deal in the development of skill. Myelin is increased through deep practice and, in turn, increased myelin affects the signal strength, speed and accuracy of the electric signals traveling through nerve fibers. This increase of myelin and its effect on neurons has more to do with skill development than had previously been realized.

2) Ignition.
"I'm going to practice it a zillion million times," she said. "I'm going to play super good."

"The Talent Code" by Daniel Coyle is a book on how to grow talent. The author is against the wisdom that talent is natural. The book is around the belief that talent come from Myelin. Myelin is the "insulation that wrap these nerve fibers and increases signal strength, speed, and accuracy." When the certain signal is sent down the nerve system, myelin wraps around the nerve fibre. The thicker the myelin, the better the signal. Thus, "skill is myelin insulation that wraps neural circuits and that grows according to certain signals."

The book is divided into three parts of talent growing; 1. Deep Practice 2. Ignition 3. Master Coaching

Contents

Part 1: Deep Practice

Chapter 1: The Sweet Spot
This is the first chapter to familiarise us with the deep practice. Coyle wrote about Brazilian football (soccer) and why it is the world's talent hotbed. He had an amazing story of Edwin Link and how his unusual device transformed the training of the Air Force.

Chapter 2: The Deep Practice Cell
This chapter surrounds the idea of myelin and how it might be the holy grail to talent. It is very scientific. To sum it up, "deep practice x 10,000 hours = world-class skill."

Chapter 3: The Brontës, the Z-Boys, and the Renaissance
The author started with the Brontë sisters from England in the 1850s who wrote fantastic children books. He also wrote about the group of skaters by the name of Z-Boys and the guilds during the renaissance and how they produced highly talented people.

Chapter 4: The Three Rules of Deep Practice
This chapter, Coyle gives us three rules of Deep Practicing. 1. Chunk It Up 2. Repeat It 3.

The content of the book is as expected, but I am highly frustrated at the charts and tables. The print on the charts/ tables are too small to read and when you try to enlarge the print, the letters appear really fuzzy. So basically, the charts and tables are useless. I wish I purchased the actual textbook rather than the kindle version. Kindle really needs to fix this because it is a terrible inconvenience for students! So I give poor reviews and do not recommend this kindle book to anyone...just buy the actual textbook!
By Noreen
Pathophysiology review is very good. Skin chapters are missing color plates referred to in the text. Respiratory sections refer to medications that were taken off the market in 2010. I find numerous examples where a medication is referred to as very effective in one paragraph and the student advised to not use it in another. It often seems that one person wrote part of the section and someone else wrote additional information and the two were merged without checking for conflicts. I'm currently using the text for class. Associated test bank questions are vague and many of them conflict with the text information. Some don't offer the correct answer as an option. In writing to the publisher with examples their editorial board agreed and will be removing my examples from the test bank. In an email from a company representative I was told the authors have been told it would be worth their while to review and revise the test bank questions as they have received numerous inqiries about these issues. The text needs the same scrutiny.

I bought this book and straight up did the 1001 problems in about 6 days. It is honestly kind of time consuming, but is worth it. Since the book has 1001 questions to play around with, it engraves concepts into your mind by repeating concepts over and over. If you've had trouble like me learning the fundamentals about electron withdrawing groups, electron donating groups, nucleophilic substitutions, nucleophilic additions, and stuff then these repeated concepts will help you remember about them forever.

Even if you're using other sources like The Berkeley Review, The Princeton Review, or the main ExamKrackers set, you should still buy this book. If you don't have enough time, just go to the back of the book where all the answers are (there are also short explanations) and open up an Excel Document and write all of the letters to the correct answers in your Excel document. Then go to the beginning of the book and start circling all of the correct answers from #1 to #1001. You have now just converted a book full of 1001 questions to a book full of 1001 facts. This takes way less time to review, but if you do have the time, you should legitimately complete the book.

I hope this has helped!
By CoolChemist
This book is a hasty review of Orgo, but it covers most of the MCAT material in relatively small number of pages. Although some diagrams are not very helpful, it tells you most of what you need. It is basically a good book if you are a time-pressed pre-med trying to take the MCAT in 2 months. If you have more time, I recommend reading over your orgo textbook once more and doing problem sets in various other MCAT preparation materials (the ones with only MCAT style problems). Hope this helps.

For decades indispensable, the AMA Manual of Style continues to provide editorial support to the medical and scientific publishing community. Since the 1998 publication of the 9th edition, however, the world of medical publishing has rapidly modernized, and the intersection of research and publishing has become ever more complex. The 10th edition of the AMA Manual of Style brings this definitive manual into the 21st century with a broadened international perspective.

In doing so, the 10th edition has expanded its electronic guidelines, with the understanding that authors now routinely submit articles through online systems and often cite Web-only content. Ethical and legal issues receive increased attention, with detailed guidelines on authorship, conflicts of interest, scientific misconduct, intellectual property, and the protection of individuals' rights in scientific research and publication. The new edition examines research ethics and editorial independence and features new material on indexing and searching as well as medical nomenclature.

The JAMA Network, one of the most respected groups of medical publications in the world, have lent members of their expert staff of professional journal editors to the committee that has produced this edition. Extensively peer-reviewed, the 10th edition provides a welcome and improved standard for the growing international medical community. More than a style manual, this 10th edition offers invaluable guidance on how to navigate the dilemmas that authors and researchers and their institutions, medical editors and publishers, and members of the news media who cover scientific research confront in a society that has thrust these issues center stage. At long last, the 10th Edition of the AMA Manual of Style is finally available, and I am happy to say it was worth the wait. As an editor who has worked in medical journals, scientific Web sites, and an agency specializing in pharmaceutical advertising, I found the 9th edition to be, at times, a bit dated and not as easy to navigate as I would have hoped. Most of those problems have been resolved in the 10th edition, as well as the inclusion of some new information that I didn't even know I was missing until I found.

The following is a list of changes in the new edition of the style guide that I found particularly helpful and relevant, and will hopefully be a quick go-to guide when you're debating whether to buy the new version or hold fast to the 9th edition.

- The section on Correct and Preferred Usage has moved from Chapter 9 to Chapter 11 and includes a wealth of information that was not in the previous edition. There is more information about the difference between race and ethnicity and when it's relevant to include sexual orientation in a scientific manuscript.

- An extended section on electronic references (3.15, 63-72). This new info is highly relevant considering since 1998 (when the 9th edition was released) there have been a number of innovations with the Internet and a number of authors choose to use the Web as sources of information.

- The section on manuscript preparation is vastly improved and expanded (Ch 4). It includes more information on the different types of tables and figures as well as new guidelines for the use of symbols and footnotes.
Style manuals are written either for editors or for authors, rarely for both. The AMA manual is a text only editors could love, it serves the interests of authors mostly as an afterthought. The "Instructions for Authors" on JAMA's website presents the essential requirements of the style in a more concise format for journal articles, the vehicles of research reporting. This is also two texts in one, a text on style and a text on medical terminology and ethics, a dubious combination. Style, by its very nature, is well served by a ten-year publication cycle. It should change only very slowly. Medical terminology, on the other hand, is in a constant state of flux. Authors working in a field are well aware of the accepted nomenclature without the need to be reminded by an inevitably dated style manual. This text is written for editors at some remove from medical practice and research. This review, on the other hand, is from an author's point of view.

The last edition of the AMA manual (1997) sought to impose the metric system on clinical measures. This initiative failed. It was simply ignored in preference to the conventional measures used in clinical practice. The new AMA style requires a conventional measure to be followed by a metric conversion factor. For example, the new AMA manual is a heavy tome, the one-thousand-plus page text weighs 4.2 pounds (to convert to kilograms multiply by 0.45). This is a sensible and useful requirement. However, you need not buy the manual to get the exhaustive conversion table, it's available on the JAMA website.

The new manual also accepts the "versioning" of online documents as research references.

Dr. Wallach's genius and mastery of multiple fields of medical science, anthropology and history combine into the most relevant message for the human race. We've all been played, especially when it comes to what we've been told about the causes of most chronic disease.

America has a health crisis, because it suffers from a truth and knowledge crisis. Read this book, and share the knowledge with everyone you know. Dr. Joel Wallach is a true genius, and a true American hero.

Incredible Epic book from Dr. Joel Wallach who in my opinion is the top American Hero of more than 30 years! He has been fighting the medical system and exposing the reality of what a fraud it all has been. We were sold a worthless bill of goods, using us like an ATM machine while only managing our symptoms. Dr. Wallach has done thousands of autopsies, sued the FDA(multiple times/won), and has been persecuted for most of his 75 yrs of living. All the doctors who rose against him are now dead and Dr. Wallach prevails. Never been sick, never been on a prescription medication, and his bone density is of an 18 year old. Dr. Wallach has been preaching from the rooftops of America and has been proven right over & over again. This book reveals it all and will deprogram you from the medical tyranny that is happening in America today. Dr. Wallach astonishes me in his vast knowledge and is the key to lead people into the great light of health. It takes you to want to open your mind and believe there is another way. EpiGenics is his life legacy book that will surely change your life. The healthcare system is corrupt and monopolized. Berton Roueché wrote for the "New Yorker" magazine for almost half a century, and was winner of the 1950 Albert Lasker Medical Journalism Award. His many volumes on physicians and medical detectives, including this book, were collected from his articles in the "New Yorker."

"The Medical Detectives" volume II is great bedtime reading, because the good guys, i.e. physicians and epidemiologists always get their villain (whether it's a germ, poison gas, or a disgruntled boyfriend). Volume II's twenty-three case histories date from 1947 to 1984, before the days when Big Insurance dictated how long patients would stay in hospitals and what kind of treatment they would receive. Some of the doctors in this book actually made house calls! A couple of the cases really stayed with me, because the patients were kept in the hospital for weeks at a time just to track down a diagnosis. In one case, a man had the hiccups. In the other, a woman had a headache. Can you guess what would happen to these patients if they went to an emergency room, today?

Anyone who is interested in medical detection will be both engrossed and instructed by Roueché's careful, detailed true-life mysteries. The cases contained in this volume range from the man who hiccupped for 27 years through the deliberate poisoning of a family. One of my favorites from 1948 is called, "The Fog". This does not refer to John Carpenter's famous 1980 horror movie, but a true story that is in some ways even more frightening than anything Hollywood could produce. It takes place in Donora, Pennsylvania, a gritty mill town along the Monongahela River, which is infamous for its fogs: "They are greasy, gagging fogs, often intact even at high noon, and they sometimes last for two or three days.

Writing is not easy; writing well is very difficult. As readers, we are deluged with a seemingly exponentially increasing number of science papers. Consequently, we are becoming ever more ruthless and discriminating in `sorting the wheat from the chaff'. Therefore, as authors, if we want our papers and grant proposals to fall into the former category, almost all of us need to substantially improve our writing. This book clearly describes the fundamental principles and practices of writing clear, synthetic, and easily readable science text that is likely to enthuse and inspire your readers. As such, it will be of great benefit to graduate students in developing their writing skills, but I anticipate that it will be of even more value to those who are already experienced in the whole science writing process.

In writing the book, Dr. Schimel practiced what he preaches. It is an excellent and entertaining read, with lots of stimulating and interesting anecdotes and broad linkages (such as to the speeches and writings of Winston Churchill and other non-scientists). The structure, flow and readability of the book are exemplary (as one would expect), but in addition he makes excellent use of short tight and longer more expansive sentences, as well as dashes and semi-colons. Furthermore, the text includes some real gems including why the process of writing science actually improves the intellectual quality of your science, and why when someone else edits your work, or you edit theirs, the initial edited text changes may be changed again - even changed back to the original text! There are very useful chapters dedicated to the particular challenges of writing science for non-native English speakers, and of writing successfully for non-specialist public audiences.

A highly infectious, deadly virus from the central African rain forest suddenly appears in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. There is no cure. In a few days, 90 percent of its victims are dead. A secret military SWAT team of soldiers and scientists is mobilized to stop the outbreak of this exotic "hot" virus.

The Hot Zone tells this dramatic story, giving a hair-raising account of the appearance of rare and lethal viruses and their "crashes" into the human race. Shocking, frightening, and impossible to ignore, The Hot Zone proves that truth really is scarier than fiction.

While the story itself is fascinating, the opening of Preston's "The Hot Zone" is the best opening I've ever read, and I'm a writer myself, the author of four novels. His use of language hints at a writer with superior skills and with much to say. Some other reviewers fail to recognize that the book is not as much about the Ebola virus, but that the Planet Earth, tired of the prospect of five billion inhabitants, is trying to fight back and eliminate mankind. Aids, Ebola, they might be just the forerunners of an army of viruses with the goal of keeping the human population from exploding in ever-increasing numbers. Most of the books among today's bestsellers have nothing to say; but "The Hot Zone " is an exception. If nothing else, read the end, and memorize it if you can. I liked it so much that I've written it down and now I've included it here, I hope I won't get in trouble with the publisher for unauthorized duplication of copyrighted material.
The following is a direct quote from Richard Preston's "The Hot Zone"
"In a sense, the earth is mounting an immune response against the human species. It is beginning to react to the human parasite, the flooding infection of people, the dead spots of concrete all over the planet, the cancerous rot-outs in Europe, Japan, and the United States, thick with replicating primates, the colonies enlarging and spreading and threatening to shock the biosphere with mass extinction. Perhaps the biosphere does not "like" the idea of five billion humans.

The compelling untold story of a group of stranded U.S. Army nurses and medics fighting to escape Nazi-occupied Europe.

When 26 Army nurses and medics - part of the 807th Medical Air Evacuation Transport Squadron - boarded a cargo plane for transport in November 1943, they never anticipated the crash landing in Nazi-occupied Albania that would lead to their months-long struggle for survival. A drama that captured the attention of the American public, the group and its flight crew dodged bullets and battled blinding winter storms as they climbed mountains and fought to survive, aided by courageous villagers who risked death at Nazi hands to help them.

A mesmerizing tale of the courage and heroism of ordinary people, The Secret Rescue tells not only a new story of struggle and endurance, but also one of the daring rescue attempts by clandestine American and British organizations amid the tumultuous landscape of the war.

I have known of this event for most of my life because my Aunt Lois (Watson) McKenzie was one of the nurses on the flight which crashed in Albania.

Cate Lineberry has written a remarkably book. Well researched and detailed, the book is a pleasure to read. Her style is gripping and enjoyable, while filling in many of the specific details of the ordeal which the group of survivors overcame. Whether the reader is a student of history, or just someone interested in a little known adventure of World War II, this is a great book for adding to the lore of that remarkable generation.

The survivors of the crash were for the most part Army nurses and medics with little or no training in survival behind enemy lines. The geography, language and culture of Albania made that place probably one of the most challenging locations in Europe for the group to try to travel through and to survive. Throw in the ever present threat of discovery by German soldiers, and you have quite a tale of heroism and perseverance for the survivors to just deal with getting through each day.

This book was a joy for me to read. I highly recommend it to anyone who may be interested in learning more about the people who served in World War II.

"THE SECRET RESCUE combines all of the elements that draw us to WWII stories: the daring of The Guns of Navarone, the suspense of The Great Escape, and the bravery reminiscent of Ill Met by Moonlight. It's the inclusion of so many women, though, that makes this story unique.'' -- Daily Beast

This mesmerizing account of the courage and bravery of ordinary women and men reveals for the first time an astonishing true story of heroic struggle and endurance.

When twenty-six Army Air Force flight nurses and medics boarded a military transport plane in November 1943 on a mission to evacuate wounded and sick troops, they didn't anticipate a crash landing in Nazi territory.

Emerging from their battered aircraft, the Americans found themselves in Albania, a country rife with chaos and danger. With hunger and sickness as their constant companions, they hid at night with courageous villagers who shared what little food they had, risking death at Nazi hands by doing so. For months, they prayed desperately to be rescued while doing everything they could to survive.
