Whether you are interested in contemporary history, war, medicine, morality and hope, you should read War Hospital. This nonfiction book about the siege of single town is an inspiring chronicle of true heroism by physicians and nurses in the face of war and its assorted horrors including internecine carnage, genocide and malign indifference. However, I first looked at this site not to see whether others enjoyed reading the book but because I wanted to see whether War Hospital had affected anyone else as much as it had me. I see that it has, and so I feel it's important to acknowledge the achievement of this book because I want everyone to have the experience I had.

What was that?

Well, as a social worker I was always quite skeptical of people who complained of `compassion fatigue' or bemoaned their inability to care deeply about the unspeakable assorted cruelties and human rights abuse that scar the globe. I looked at such complaints as little more than excuses for choosing not to care. Yet I couldn't ignore the fact that I was becoming inured to the news of genocide in the Balkans, especially because it was being rapidly supplanted by genocide in other areas such as Rwanda. Although genocide is equally evil throughout the world and suffering itself has no color, I resented the fact that Africans were getting less press and global outrage. and because journalists were also tiring of the Balkans they began to desert it for the next hotspot du jour. In the age of information overload these were all competing for our attention and the surfeit of shocking details were producing a sort of ennui. I would never have admitted to compassion fatigue, but it was becoming harder to access my outrage and easier to fall into a melancholy desire to not know more.
This is an important, gripping book about doctors in wartime. And it is an impressive, beautifully written first book by Sheri Fink. War Hospital is a powerful, haunting narrative presented in fast-paced, present time, first person narrative that unfolds like a Greek tragedy. This is the story of a group of very young, inexperienced doctors amidst the siege and eventual fall of Srebnenica that ended with genocide in Europe as the world stood by. The very fact that our protagonists - humanitarians and idealists-are trapped in the midst of the eventual ethnic cleansing of Bosnian Muslims by Bosnian Serbs poses the book's central questions. Is the traditional role of humanitarian medicine -- neutral, unarmed, detached - sufficient in the face of looming massacre? And are the similarly evolved views of sovereignty and non-intervention in the international community outdated? If so, how and where does one choose sides, decide to intervene, offer medical care, or seek armed protection?

But the strength of War Hospital ultimately lies in Fink's brilliant structural choice to save the analysis, the conclusions, the politics and policy dilemmas for an epilogue thus allowing the reader to become engrossed with the stories of Drs. Ilijaz Pilav, Eric Dachy, Fatima Dautbasic and a handful of others who serve as the only doctors for the 70,000 or so Bosnian Muslims surrounded in enclaves in eastern Bosnia. From the opening scene where Dr. Ejub Alic, a 32-year old pediatric resident with no surgical training, performs an amputation with a razor cleaned in hydrogen peroxide, you will find yourself caught up in a swift, compelling novelistic reconstruction of events worthy of a future film or television series.

I use this book to help my students to prepare for the DANB exams. I have both the 1st and now the 2nd editions so that means I have 6 exam sets for each challenge (ICE, RHS & Chairside)...along with the answers and explanations. Usually my students feel very prepared after using this text, but this edition has many errors that need to be corrected. The original edition also had errors, but not as many as this second edition. I still used this for preparation for my students...it was they who caught many of the errors!

This book was purchased on recommendation by my text book's website, and I have NOT been disappointed!
For beginning Pathophysiology, this book is incredibly easy to understand and the visual depictions of processes helps you "see development in progress" in your mind's eye. (This concept is incredibly important when it comes time for exam, because you have NO IDEA what questions will be asked about the processes. With this guide, you understand the process all the way through, so you're prepared to answer ANY questions!)
I have purchased my textbook (INCREDIBLY WORDY and COMPLICATED) and flash cards (Great for studying once you understand the diseases you must know, but not much help in this initial learning process) and another Pathophysiology guide suggested by another nursing program...all of which I feel may have been wasted money. The textbook will be useful as a reference...but it's definitely NOT easy reading.
This Pathophysiology Made Incredibly Easy is PERFECT for me. I even have the Pathophysiology Made Incredibly Visual, which is another great reference, but overall, this book is my favorite!
I hope this review helps you in your purchase decision...and I wish you the best in your studies.

Dr. Cutler tells it like it is. No cover-ups here like the one from the .... How do I know? My wife is extremely ill from dental amalgam poisoning for more than 20 years. She is seriously chronically poisoned. After so much lying from dentists and ignorance from medical doctors, here comes a good book that sheds light to one of the most insidious forms of sickness, mercury poisoning! Even after all mercury amalgams are replaced by safe composites, the next nightmare comes when trying to figure out how to get rid of the mercury already inside your brain, nervous system, kidneys, blood, etc from an already debilitated and compromised body.
Dr. Cutler says on page 54: "First, do no harm. Note: the DMPS challenge is not a legitimate diagnostic test since over half the population will give a positive result but most of them do not appear to have amalgam illness. In addition there is a high incidence of adverse drug reactions during it, including permanent disability and death. It should never be used. DMSA challenge tests that involve the administration of 500 mg - 3g of DMSA as a single dose are also dangerous and not diagnostic."
Dr. Cutler says on page 89: "Therapeutic approaches currently offered by some practitioners but which should NEVER be used include: DMPS by injection except when oral administration is contraindicated and dosage is low, DMPS or DMSA on any schedule not involving frequent administration of equal doses for at least several days in a row, EDTA chelation, or penicillamine in any form. Supplementary cysteine, glutathione, or a "high sulfur" diet, or chlorella should NOT be used. All of these "therapies" will be VERY HARMFUL to you."
Dr.
Mercury-containing "amalgam" fillings have been with us for 150 years, and have been the intermittent cause of vehement controversy for just as long. In the 1850s or 60s, for a while it was a crime to insert these fillings into human beings in parts of the United States. In the 1930s Alfred Stock, a brilliant chemist, wanted these fillings banned; various American dentists have urged the same since the 1970s. In Sweden they were banned until the European Union intervened. The use of mercury to treat syphilis, as was customary into the 1890s, is now a huge embarrassment; many of the "symptoms" attributed to syphilis are now known to have been due to the "treatment."

In various European countries, the medical fraternity acknowledges that mercury, being a liquid, slowly evaporates from these fillings. This is where things become complicated. Cutler adduces evidence from different journals that the ability to excrete mercury varies by more than a factor of 20 between humans; in other words, as in lactose intolerance, a minority of human beings can't tolerate an otherwise safe product. Even more counterintuitively, mercury poisoning, unlike most other intoxications, does not have a single set of symptoms, but rather at least 20 very different sets of symptoms. I was initially deeply skeptical of Dr. Cutler's claims, which are at odds with everything you hear from "mainstream" medical authorities. However, the more I delved into the established scientific facts, the more confirmation I found for his claims. As part of my quest to regain my health I obtained excerpts from a 1400 page post-doctoral thesis on the side-effects of amalgam fillings by a dentist who went on to post-doctoral studies at Harvard University.

In April 1992, a handful of young physicians, not one of them a surgeon, was trapped along with 50,000 men, women, and children in the embattled enclave of Srebrenica, Bosnia-Herzegovina. There the doctors faced the most intense professional, ethical, and personal predicaments of their lives.

Drawing on extensive interviews, documents, and recorded materials she collected over four and a half years, doctor and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Sheri Fink tells the harrowing--and ultimately enlightening--story of these physicians and the three who try to help them: an idealistic internist from Doctors without Borders, who hopes that interposition of international aid workers will help prevent a massacre; an aspiring Bosnian surgeon willing to walk through minefields to reach the civilian wounded; and a Serb doctor on the opposite side of the front line with the army that is intent on destroying his former colleagues.

With limited resources and a makeshift hospital overflowing with patients, how can these doctors decide who to save and who to let die? Will their duty to treat patients come into conflict with their own struggle to survive? And are there times when medical and humanitarian aid ironically prolong war and human suffering rather than helping to relieve it?

I've read the book about 3 times. Not because of I didn't know what else to read, but more to its condensed character in covering state-of-the-art evaluation methods valid in medical, dental, and biological sciences. The authors start with a general introduction to evaluation per se (What is it? Who needs it and Why? What makes it so difficult?) and discuss next mainly in two different parts 1) objectivists and 2) subjectivist studies giving detailed hands-on the general structure, basics of measurement, study design, conduct, and analysis of each study modalities, including methodological guidelines and a proposal quality checklist! They finaly describe the organizational evaluation and hierarchy of medical information resources as well as ethical and legal considerations during evaluation studies. References after each chapter are as standard as the self-tests to give feedback and motivation. In order to get maximum benefit the reader should be familiar with basic mathematics and biostatistics. A must for all helthcare professionals conducting research.

I was looking for something that had an approach to healthcare informatics evaluations, and I found what I wanted in this book. This is the second edition, so don't be put off by the title, which was revised from the first edition.

The authors of this book set out the basics of evaluation techniques very comprehensively, and backed that up with excellent examples of evaluations. Even though they modified what we might recognize as standard research methodology, (use of subjectivist and objectivist approaches, when we might use qualitative and quantitative), they explain it so well, that it is easy to follow, quite apart from providing additional information about other approaches.

I thought the key theorem they included is one that Dr. Friedman developed about the use of computers to increase the value of the outcome. That is a wonderful basis to keep in mind when undertaking evaluations. Essentially the question is, does the addition of the computer improve our knowledge?

Finally, I liked many of the practical examples that they included of studies and approaches to them.

Overall, this is a great book and a solid reference for anyone interested in the subject of healthcare systems evaluations. It is as relevant to the academic reader as to the commercial practitioner.

This was a required text. The loose leaf option is very economical. It comes 3-hole punched and ready to put in a binder. I find that it is easier to shelve in a binder than the soft cover texts. As far as content - a reasonably well written book. Some of the topics arrangements are akward. Would like to see more summary comparison tables.

I actually ordered this little guide along with the RNotes clinical pocket guide at the same time and they have the same information pretty much but I prefer the way the RNotes is presented better than the way information is presented in this guide.

RNnotes has all the critical care info this guide has plus more. For example - labs in this are given but the units are not given. Cranial nerves are listed but in the RNotes cranial nerves are listed with how to assess the nerve. Also quite a bit of info in this is given in grey print on a grey background which is hard to read. After about 2 minutes of comparing the two books I knew I only needed the one so I returned this one. If I hadn't ordered the two guides together I wouldn't have compared the two and would probably have been happy, so take that into consideration when you read this.

For the purposes of studying for step 1s (which is what I bought them for), these cards are way too detailed. They give you more information than you need to know and are simply too much of a time sink to go through. You DO NOT need these cards to get the 240+/99 that everyone craves for the boards. I personally ended up using Lange's pharmacology cards and really love them.

If you are genuinely interested in pharmacology then these cards are comprehensive and wonderful to have. But lets be honest here. In an age of PDAs and laptops, you could google, epocrats, dynamed, etc drug information on your phone or computer faster than referring to these cards.
By L. Sun
I got PharmCards for my pharmacology class and for step 1 of boards. I have found them very helpful so far. My one complaint is that they are very glossy so it's difficult to highlight or write your own notes on them without smearing ink everywhere. I've found that the Sharpie pens work best for underlining or adding notes. I like how key features such as mechanisms of action are illustrated on the back of the cards.
