I originally purchased the 2nd edition of this when I started residency. As soon as I saw the 3rd edition was out, I immediately preordered it.

The biggest obstacle of the 2nd edition, lack of mobile access, has been resolved with the expert consult online access. Now, you can login to the website anywhere you are (Urgent Care Clinic, ER, Denny's at 3am), and look up how to treat a dislocated contact lens or bleeding after dental surgery.

This book has many pearls for topics that you will not find in any other major emergency textbook. It is well worth the investment for any primary care or emergency medicine library, ESPECIALLY since you can now access it online and not have to lug it three miles uphill in your backpack on your fixie (or is that just me).

I have not done a thorough search, but so far it seems that some of the out-of-date references and advice have been updated with new literature support and I have not found one glaring error yet. Lastly, the cover picture is priceless, and has not changed throughout the editions. I have had the patient who had a bug fly in their ear, came into the ED, and the only treatment that was necessary was to tell them to take their hand off their ear so the bug could fly out.

Thanks, Dr. Buttaravoli!!!

I am a new grad that recently started working as a PA in the emergency department fast track/ambulatory section. I found this resource as an extremely valuable tool when helping me with the additional details and key points I should not and better not miss. Each illness/injury starts with the presentation of that specific condition followed by a "what to do" section (items to rule out/symptoms to look for/keep points of the exam not to miss). Each item also has a "what not to do" list of procedures/medications/etc that should not be done with that pertaining illness/injury. It even describes how to perform minor procedures if you've never done them. It is a large, thick book but definitely a handy reference that sits by me on the desk. I highly recommend this resource as an additional tool to help you on your way, especially as a new grad!!! You won't regret it!! Definitely worth the money!!!
