With the futile search for Iraq's weapons of mass destruction some Americans may just now be realizing that our government lies to us. The Fluoride Deception documents a cover-up perpetrated by a military-industrial-government complex starting in the 1930's and extending to the present day. Any person involved in the issue of fluoridation will want this excellent compendium of the history and science. The author has uncovered previously secret documents which reveal that fluoridation promotion is in the same league with "cigarette science" when it comes to distortion of science and public opinion.
After documenting all the scientific evidence for why fluoridation is a bad idea, a common response has been: "If it's so obviously bad, why do my dentist, the Surgeon General, and my toothpaste company all say it is so wonderful?" Bryson's book gives the answer. A powerful group of industries have worked behind the scenes to sell the idea of fluoridation. Their public relations campaign has been one of the most successful in history.
I long took for granted that fluoride was the reason I had much better teeth than my parents. I grew up with Crest toothpaste commercials repeating their "Look mom, no cavities!" message into my young impressionable mind ad nauseum. But not too long ago I found that rates of cavities have dropped precipitously in all industrial countries of the world over the past 50 years and most of these countries do not fluoridate their water. Countries with detailed public health records reveal the decline started before fluoride was ever added to toothpaste or water.
Christopher Bryson definitely did thorough research before writing this book. It is a startling look at the awful truth about the deadly poison fluoride. Before WWII it was used only as rat and ant-roach poison. The only reason fluoride ever got used for anything else was the need for a gas so reactive it would split uranium atoms in half. We were in a race with the Germans to develop the Hydrogen Bomb. Neither the US or Germany were having success in working with fluoride. It would blow up whatever it was housed in and set the building on fire. Finally, they were able to prevent this from happening and Hiroshima and Nagasaki are history. The real star of this event according to Bryson is not uranium, but rather fluoride.

Once WWII was over we had the cold with the Soviets to contend with. We needed to keep ahead of them in the nuclear arms race. To most Americans fluoride was still considered rat posion. Something had to be done to make it acceptable to the American people. Some flawed research in the 1950s showed that it prevented tooth decay. The rest is history.

Many court battles have been fought over the toxicity of fluoride to the soil. One famous case was fought by the New Jersey peach growers with Dupont. They were downwind from the Dupont plant. In the summer of 1943 their orchards were blighted, their poultry were dying, and their fields were often strewed with dead cattle. Some cows were so crippled they could not stand up. The horses were to stiff to work. Workers who ate the produce they had picked vomited all night and into the next day. The Farm workers sued DuPont and the Manhattan Project (atomic weapons research) for fluoride damages. Workers inside the plant were often exposed to large doses of fluoride.

When I read the title of this book, the words "Exam Cram" had me thinking that this was going to be an NCLEX-RN review book, with a slew of practice questions intertwined. My thoughts were incorrect though. The book has a quick reference guide that provides general information about the NCLEX-RN exam itself, along with, serum electrolyte values, hematology values, ABG values, blood chemistry values, therapeutic drug levels, normal vital signs for an adult, maternity norms, abnormalities in the laboring obstetric client, TORCHS syndrome in neonates, Angicoagulant therapy/monitoring, Rule of Nines, acid/base balance, theapeutic diets, cultural and religious considerations, legal issues in nursing, and tips for assigning staff duties. I know that there was a lot of material listed there on what it covers, but it is a very brief 4 page cram sheet covering ALL of that information. Do not get me wrong, it is very handy, and useful to have around, but that is the only CRAM part about it. There is a short 7 page reference in an appendix, but again, this section is also very brief. There are five different practice exams, each containing 250 questions a piece. There is a quick reference area where you can quickly see what the correct answer is, and then another area where it provides you with the correct answer along with a rationale.

I am currently in my last semester of nursing school and have to take the HESI Exit Exam with a score of 900+ in order to graduate. This book has been helpful in providing number of practice questions for me to use to help build up my testing stamina, and to help me practice questions to see where my weak areas are.

Sinauer Associates and W.H. Freeman are proud to introduce Principles of Life. Written in the spirit of the reform movement that is reinvigorating the introductory majors course, Principles of Life cuts through the thicket of excessive detail and factual minutiae to focus on what matters most in the study of biology today. Students explore the most essential biological ideas and information in the context of the field’s defining experiments, and are actively engaged in analyzing research data. The result is a textbook that is hundreds of pages shorter (and significantly less expensive) than the current majors introductory books. I'm taking BSC 2010 at the University of Florida, and unfortunately, this textbook replaced the Campbell Biology textbook this year. I knew coming in that the course will be interesting, and fairly easy for me because I took AP Biology in High School and I still remember a fair number of the concepts. The one factor that I forgot to take into account is the possibility that we'd have a terrible textbook. There are a couple of reasons why this textbook is horrible for anyone who wants to learn about Biology; first, none of the concepts are explained very clearly. Second, the concepts aren't explained in enough detail. This forms the basis of a textbook that is too convoluted to actually be of any help for the BioPortal quizzes (which, if you're taking this course at UF, will be extremely annoying...trust me). Basically, it seems like the authors just wanted to throw together a Biology textbook for the heck of it, and see how much money they could make before people realized that there was a superior alternative (the Campbell textbook). I give this textbook 2 stars simply because it's about Biology.

Even though I'm not a biology major, I find myself enthralled by biological studies. And so when I enrolled in my biology course, I found out that my class would be using this book (Hillis' Principles of Life) rather than the Campbell Biology text, and I was rather surprised. I found this text to be excruciatingly inferior to the Campbell's, and the only mildly good aspect that I could think of would have to be the diagrams and pictures if one could be bothered to look at. The text itself are ridiculously brief, and do not explain very well about each topic matter.

I didn't purchase the actual book from Amazon, but rather I bought the access to Bioportal through the publisher's website, and it included the ebook with the Bioportal access. It is a horrible experience having to navigate through the pages trying to find the one paragraph to answer the question for the assignments (I ended up googling most of them to no avail due to the book's uselessness), and if you try to search using the find feature, you would still be stuck at square one!

The other biology classes at UT (which funny enough, is where Hillis is from) all use the Campbell text, but I chose my professor because I saw that people reviewed her as being a good teacher, but that is ruined by her insistence that we be the first class to try out this book. I had purchase the 3rd edition of Campbell's Biology (for a meager $10 at Half-Price) to make sure that I don't have to blunder my through this horrible book for the rest of the year.

The table of content in the kindle version is very limited to the main chapters, and moreover, pages are not indexed. So there is no way, and I mean really no way, to go to a specific page or chapter. This results in very poor navigation for a school textbook, especially when paying $60+.

I am updating my previews review after reading further into the book. In the end, the kindle issue is the least of my concerns with this book. It is extremely opinionated and the authors makes hundreds of statements about HIS interpretation of what someone else is saying and blaming that someone for HIS interpretation. I am swiss and in Switzerland many of my best friends were foreigners and of different races, and I feel oppressed by this author. He is treating me like he knows what is going in my head, because I am white. There so many occasions, especially in the microagression section, where the author brings up a fictious statement by someone and concludes that the person really inferred something different. Well that may be in some cases, and so context, tone of voice, is important. But these nuances are left aside in the book. It's a pity because I see it in many americans, there are so many rules as what you should or should not say. Well I am sorry, I believe that the most qualified person for the job should get the job, and when I hire, that's exactly what I do. But based on this book, I am committing a microagression and am a racist. It just so turns out that I hired as many minorities (LGBT, asian, european,..) in the last year as white americans. So the author is actually making a microagression against me, interpreting my statements and tells me what my intent is. Who is he to know so much about me?

Some of the chapters are definitely better than the previous edition, but overall you probably should read both. They tend to short change one area of treatment in one edition and then delve deeply in the next. Using this method to keep the book size small. Many areas are repetitive as different authors are used in similar areas and approach the information in different ways. Altogether it is my favorite go to for general surgery.

The Fluoride Deception
Download books file now The Fluoride Deception [Kindle Edition] for everyone book mediafire, rapishare, and mirror link With the narrative punch of Jonathan Harr’s A Civil Action and the commitment to environmental truth-telling of Erin Brockovich, The Fluoride Deception documents a powerful connection between big corporations, the U.S. military, and the historic reassurances of fluoride safety provided by the nation’s public health establishment. The Fluoride Deception reads like a thriller, but one supported by two hundred pages of source notes, years of investigative reporting, scores of scientist interviews, and archival research in places such as the newly opened files of the Manhattan Project and the Atomic Energy Commission. The book is nothing less than an exhumation of one of the great secret narratives of the industrial era: how a grim workplace poison and the most damaging environmental pollutant of the cold war was added to our drinking water and toothpaste.

This has been invaluable to me as a new hospice nurse. I have been a nurse for over 30 years, but hospice work is new to me. Being on the road, having this petite but powerful reference work at my side has helped enormously with all kind of questions. When I am on call, it is so reassuring to have this book by my side as I work. I especially recommend this for all new hospice nurses. I will be using this book for many years to come.
By Margarita.
This symptom management handbook is a very valuable resource for the health professional working in areas that require a higher understanding of pain control outside of the regualted medical-surgical and emergency hospital environment. Pain in oncology, burn, chronic disease, wound and hospice patients is a complex issue for both the patient and the healthcare provider. The algorithms help professionals look scientifically at "if" "then" issues. "If" this happens "then" this is what can be done for the situation. The table of contents tells the reader immediately that every known topic that causes pain is discussed. Then each algorithm presents the user with the drugs used, the assessment needed for the situation, and the non-pharmacologic interventions. There is even a section on the rapid use of spiritual care. If you are a lay person dealing with chronic pain or you are caring for a loved one in pain this handbook will give you understanding why the professionals involved make the decisions they make. Finally the Appendix is full of useful tools to further expertise in the area of chronic pain control. (The size of the handbook slips easily in a uniform pocket.)

A diet plan proven to relieve symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive disorders—presented by the world’s leading experts and tailored to you

“What can I do to feel better?” For years, millions of adults who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have asked this question, often to be met with scientifically unfounded or inadequate advice.

The low-FODMAP diet is the long-awaited answer. In clinical trials, over three quarters of people with chronic digestive symptoms gain significant relief by reducing their intake of FODMAPs—difficult-to-digest carbs found in foods such as wheat, milk, beans, soy, and certain fruits, vegetables, nuts, and sweeteners.

In The Complete Low-FODMAP Diet, Sue Shepherd and Peter Gibson explain what causes digestive distress, how the low-FODMAP diet helps, and how to:

• Identify and avoid foods high in FODMAPs
• Develop a personalized and sustainable low-FODMAP diet
• Shop, menu plan, entertain, travel, and eat out with peace of mind
• Follow the program if you have IBS, celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or diabetes, and if you eat a vegetarian, vegan, low-fat, or dairy-free diet.

And, with 80 delicious low-FODMAP, gluten-free recipes, you can manage your symptoms, feel great, and eat well—for life.

"The Complete Low-FODMAP Diet: A Revolutionary Plan for Managing IBS and Other Digestive Disorders" lays out the principles for a diet to control the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome as well as help for non-responsive celiacs and those with IBD whose symptoms may be aggravated by sensitivity to FODMAPs. The book is written by Sue Shepherd, PhD, an Australian nutritionist who was instrumental in developing the low-FODMAP diet, and by Peter Gibson, MD, a gastroenterologist at Monash University in Australia, which continues to do a lot of research on IBS and the low-FODMAP diet. FODMAP is an acronym for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols, which are all poorly absorbed short-chain carbohydrates. Indigestible sugars, in other words. Lactose, fructose, and polyols are poorly absorbed in many people, while fructans and galato-oligosaccharides are not absorbed by anyone. When they are not absorbed, the sugars are easily fermented by intestinal bacteria, which produces symptoms.

The first part of the book explains the principles behind the low-FODMAP diet. The second part of the book is recipes. There are about 60 pages of substance, followed by 190 pages of recipes and menus that I did not find at all useful. The good news is that the substance of the book is short and easy to digest (no pun intended, ahem). The authors begin by explaining the differences between food allergies, hypersensitivities, and intolerance. IBS symptoms are largely caused by intolerance. They briefly discuss the Rome III diagnostic criteria for IBS before getting into theories about causes and descriptions of common symptoms. Oddly, the authors are dismissive of small intestinal bacteria overgrowth (SIBO) as a cause, though there is now a large body of research on it.
Firstly a disclaimer: this book claims to present a "revolutionary plan for managing IBS and other digestive disorders" and nothing in this review should be viewed as medical advice or a recommendation!

What works for one might not work for another but the book is said to feature the first and only scientifically proven diet of its kind, backed by clinical trials noting that up to three-quarters of affected adults who reduced their intake of FODMAPs -- a set of difficult-to-digest carbohydrates found in wheat, milk, beans, soy and certain fruits, vegetables, nuts and sweeteners -- also saw improvement in their IBS symptoms. Consult with your healthcare provider if in doubt, but perhaps those who suffer from IBS will know what has (or has not) worked for them to date and will be willing to give it a try. At least you are only modifying your food input, rather than mixing bottles of chemicals together and hoping for success.
Right, the boring legals out of the way, what do you get? Before you even can get in the kitchen there is a lot of reading ahead of you - nothing seems to be left to chance. From a look at how food can interact and cause problems with your digestion and common illnesses, one gets introduced to the concept behind a low-FODMAP diet and how you can introduce it to your lifestyle without too much upheaval. Special focus is also given to vegetarians, vegans and those suffering from other illnesses such as diabetes and celiac disease. After a quick look at suggested menu plans and methods for "keeping on track" it is straight down to the recipes. Throughout the book the text seems to be fairly clear, understandable and focussed. Many dietary books could learn from this approach.

By soccerplaya727

This much-anticipated book presents the procedural phases required to achieve optimal results in the esthetic rehabilitation of patients in need of fixed prostheses. Communication between the clinician and the technician, which is essential to the esthetic, biologic, and functional integration of the prosthetic rehabilitation, is highlighted through a step-by-step presentation of all clinical and laboratory procedures. Chapters demonstrate methods to obtain accurate facebow recordings, impression materials and techniques, fabrication of provisional restorations, and incorporation of interdisciplinary therapies for ideal comfort and esthetics. All of this information is transferred to the final restorations, which should provide patients with long-term prosthetic solutions exhibiting appropriate fit, form, and function. Hundreds of full-color clinical photographs and detailed illustrations accompany each treatment phase and situation described. This beautiful book picks up where Volume 1 ended and delivers its message with equal clarity and precision.

Review

We actively encourage all members of the Romana s Pilates® instructor network, as well as trainees in our instructor training program, to read this book. We believe it s a great source of information to heighten one s understanding and awareness of how the body moves. --Daria Pace, Instructor Trainer, Romana s Pilates®

This work is truly by one who understands movement. Calais-Germain shows her respect for the logic of human anatomy and biomechanics, and reveals her experience in dance. The text is a necessity for all dance teachers and students in their pursuit of further knowledge of the art form. --Moira McCormack, MSc, MCSP, SRP, Lecturer in Anatomy, Royal Academy of Dance

Our students love it! The consistent sequencing of information about each body region helps students develop a thinking process about that part, i.e., 'This is how it's put together, so this is how it works.' --Pat Archer, M.S., L.M.P., A.T.C., Director of Education, Brenneke School of Massage, Seattle

About the Author

Blandine Calais-Germain is the celebrated author of Anatomy of Movement, Anatomy of Movement: Exercises, The Female Pelvis: Anatomy and Exercises, and Anatomy of Breathing. Her lifelong involvement with dance, both as performer and teacher, led to an interest in other physical disciplines and to more formal study of the complex and integrated movements of the body. She studied physiotherapy at the French School of Orthopedics and Massage in Paris, and subsequently developed an innovative method for teaching the physical structures of anatomy in relation to movement, which she teaches at workshops in France to students from all over the world.

Advice for a Young Investigator

Advice for a Young Investigator (Bradford Books) [Hardcover]

Santiago Ramon y Cajal was a mythic figure in science. Hailed as the father of modern anatomy and neurobiology, he was largely responsible for the modern conception of the brain. His groundbreaking works were New Ideas on the Structure of the Nervous System and H istology of the Nervous System in Man and Vertebrates. In addition to leaving a legacy of unparalleled scientific research, Cajal sought to educate the novice scientist about how science was done and how he thought it should be done. This recently rediscovered classic, first published in 1897, is an anecdotal guide for the perplexed new investigator as well as a refreshing resource for the old pro.

Cajal was a pragmatist, aware of the pitfalls of being too idealistic -- and he had a sense of humor, particularly evident in his diagnoses of various stereotypes of eccentric scientists. The book covers everything from valuable personality traits for an investigator to social factors conducive to scientific work.

Santiago Ramon y Cajal's achievement, the neuronal doctrine -undoubtedly the foundation of all relevant knowledge about the nervous systems, including the human brain-, was not the product of teamwork, technology or fashion. It was the achievement of his educated insight and uncomparable dedication. Scholars in the field of psychology teach us that advice can be interpreted as an attempt to justify the thoughts and actions of its originator. It seems inevitable that this work should reflect Cajal's disillusions with the institutionalization of mediocrity and with the arbitrariness of academic hierarchy. Surely, today, readers in numerous parts of the world will find these commonplace. Yet, Cajal's voice sounds as loud and clear as ever as a guiding light in the obscure path of human accomplishment. It will prevent any cultured reason from originating the kind of monsters that arise from its dreams. The book will -quoting Lucian- "...ornament your soul with what concerns you most: temperance, justice, piety, kindliness, reasonableness, understanding, steadfastness, love of all that is beautiful, ardour towards all that is sublime; for these are the truly flawless jewels of the soul... for though you yourself depart from life, you will never cease associating with men of education and conversing with men of eminence".
I have returned to these pages constantly since I was in medical school.
Recommended to lay people or scientists alike of an inquisitive nature who disregard authority, distrust officiality, wish to create, and consider themselves perpetual students of men and nature. A vey useful resource, too, when things go wrong in the lab.
By Dr. Juan M. Pascual
Too often our science is cleaned and polished to the point that it appears logical and quite easy. This remarkable monograph gives a much clearer view of the strenuous, adventurous, and often confusing nature of actually being a pioneer. It explores the social and political nature of scientific advance in a remarkably honest way, and each chapter rings true to the ears of a practicing neurobiologist today. It has quickly become favorite reading and the subject of discussion at our university, and is a must read for anyone interested in the actual craft of doing biology.
By Thomas Hughes
