Incorporating the thinking, feeling, and behaving dimensions of human experience, the ninth edition of Corey's best-selling text offers an easy-to-understand text that helps you compare and contrast the therapeutic models expressed in counseling theories. Corey introduces you to the major theories (psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, Gestalt, reality, behavior, cognitive-behavior, family systems, feminist, and postmodern approaches) and demonstrates how each theory can be applied to a single case ("Stan"). With his trademark style, he shows you how to apply those theories in practice, and helps you learn to integrate the theories into an individualized counseling style.

Note: This review refers to the international paperback edition.

FYI, I am a psychology graduate student (MA-MFT). I actually love the content in this text. It is a little dry at times (as is the norm for this type of text), but is very concise and well-assembled. Unlike many texts I have used in the past, this book utilizes a straight-forward approach to delivering the content, a high-level overview of the major theories used in contemporary psychotherapy. There are no ugly formatting issues, which plague many other texts I have used recently (what is *with* publishers these days, anyway? This is not a style contest. We want the information delivered to us in an easy-to-read, concise format without the gimmicks). If only all other texts were this "cleanly" formatted.

Now for the bad news: the good news is the bad news has nothing to do with the content. I love this book, I really do. All I can say is, if you need to buy this for school, get the hardcover. I made the huge error of being penny-wise, but pound-foolish, as the cliche goes, saving a ton of money on the softcover, international edition (which I must admit costs less than half the price of the hardcover). Unfortunately, this book is too big for a softcover, and this is the cheapest possible material used for a softcover I have seen yet (and I have close to 100 textbooks). During its very first use, the front cover immediately tore away from the spine and began fraying along the bottom edge where it rested against my shirt as I read. Yes, really. I had to resort to wrapping ALL the edges of the front and back covers with clear packing tape to protect them. Yes, it looks awful, but I did not have time to return the text and get another one. I did not contact the seller, because, what can they really do??
