I bought this book on the recommendation of my senior resident at the beginning of my surgery clerkship, and it turned out to be a great purchase. Note: I am applying into pediatrics residencies, so my goal during the surgery rotation was just to survive - I was NOT a gunner. However, ALL of my classmates ended up borrowing this book to look at before going in on cases. It covers all of the surgeries you'll scrub in on. It really is perfect prep for the O.R. and contains all the information you are expected to know by pimping surgeons. I really liked the way it is organized - easy to read, written in sentences (I find it hard to study from just bullet points.) It also contains plenty of illustrations and fits in your white coat pocket. Out of all the books that I've used on my core clerkships, this one was probably the most useful. It might not be sufficient for the shelf exam on its own though - I supplemented it with a book of practice questions (Lange Q&A) and actually ended up doing well on the exam. (Even though I was NOT a fan of the surgery clerkship in general!)
