Dr. Hollenbach knows what he's talking about, and he tells it like it is. This book covers almost all of the 'unwritten rules', including explicitly addressing the kinds of biases reviewers may have with respect to the laboratory size, the training history of the mentor, and the background of the candidate. He also gives great advice as to how to deal with those issues. Both the mentor and the applicant should read this book before writing the application. It is well written and easy to read, and the points are clearly made. Should be on the shelf for any department or laboratory that has trainees who will apply for NRSA grants.
By M. S. Atkisson
I recommend this book to anyone with students or postdocs interested in writing an F fellowship. Having sat on peer review panel for these grants for many years, I can tell you with authority that Dr Hollenbach has provided a comprehensive analysis of what reviewers are looking for in each section of an F series grant. WELL WORTH the price
