YA. Arranged thematically, this resource traces the evolution of the constantly changing realm of medicine and makes parallels with other events of the era. Each essay is written by an expert in the field. While there are several references to the bubonic plague (although only under "plague, bubonic" and "black death"), there are no entries for medicine during the Civil War. The Ebola virus is mentioned in the chronology, but it is not discussed within the text. While the concentration is on traditional Western medicine, some alternative forms such as homeopathy and acupuncture are included. Boxed inserts cover related events or diseases. The numerous illustrations and photographs are precisely captioned. In addition to the page citation, the helpful glossary gives the birth and death dates for medical personalities, as well as their nationality and medical specialty.?Claudia Moore, W. T. I decided, given the variation in literature available, to read and review three books on medicine by Roy Porter at once. These are this one, the Cambridge Illustrated History: Medicine the other two are - "The Greatest Benefit of Mankind" and "Gout, the Patrician Maladay". I thought this was the best approach as people might be looking for a reference work to buy and trying to toss up between which one to get and what the advantages and disadvantages of buying one of these would be. Well for the first two of these. I read "Gout" because it offered a view of Porter's work in a more focussed subject in contrast with the two other generalised works. So if you are interested in comparing and contrasting you can read the other reviews on my review page. I've offered some comments on the other two works here in this review though.
The Cambridge History is divided into ten chapters, four of which have been written by Porter himself (he is editor of the whole book). Each chapter is independent of the others and follows one quite broad topic. This means you might read over the same historical period more than one chapter. The subjects include such as 'History of Disease', 'Rise in Medicine', 'Hospitals'
The great advantage of this book over the other two mentioned is that it has been liberally illustrated in both colour and black white pictures. They intersperse the text all the way through - and this sort of socio-medical history very much benefits from this sort of treatment. It provides both support for the text and makes for easy reading. The text itself isn't too bogged down in technically yawnable detail, Porter himself is pretty readable, but at the same time it is not a light-weight work written simply to gratify a tabloid market.

Public Health Informatics and Information Systems

Public Health Informatics and Information Systems [Kindle Edition]

Author: | Language: English | ISBN: B000QCQSXK | Format: PDF, EPUB

Public Health Informatics and Information Systems
Download Public Health Informatics and Information Systems for everyone book with Mediafire Link Download Link This book covers all aspects of public health informatics and
discusses the creation and management of an information technology
infrastructure that is essential in linking state and local
organizations in their efforts to gather data for the surveillance and
prevention. Public health officials will have to understand basic
principles of information resource management in order to make the
appropriate technology choices that will guide the future of their
organizations. As the major topic at the American Medical Informatics
Association's (AMIA) spring congress in 2001, public health has moved
into the spotlight, given the importance of implementing a population-
based health approach and to addressing chronic health conditions.
This book marks the first systematic effort to provide informatics
principles and examples of practice in a public health context. In
doing so, it clarifies the ways in which newer information
technologies will improve individual and community health status. This
book's primary purpose is to consolidate key information and promote a
strategic approach to information systems and development, making it a
resource for use by faculty and students of public health, as well as
the practicing public health professional.
Chapter highights include: The Governmental and Legislative Context of
Informatics; Assessing the Value of Information Systems; Ethics,
Information Technology, and Public Health; and Privacy,
Confidentiality, and Security. Review questions are featured at the
end of every chapter. Aside from its use for public health
professionals, the book will be used by schools of public health,
clinical and public health nurses and students, schools of social
work, allied health, and environmental sciences. Drs. O'Carroll and
Yasnoff are public health specialists at the Centers for Disease Books with free ebook downloads available Public Health Informatics and Information Systems

The publication of this book has been highly anticipated by many in the emerging field of public health informatics and it does not disappoint. Although seemingly targeted at those new or recently introduced to the discipline, or those "crossing over" from other areas within the broader informatics arena, content is very well-suited for all comers, with sufficient detail to satisfy even those familiar with the many issues detailed in the richly detailed case example chapters.
The breadth of material covered is excellent, making it especially appropriate as an introductory or intermediate text. Of particular interest will be the section of the book on "The Science of Public Health Informatics" which includes particularly fine chapters on information architecture, value assessment, management of personnel and projects, and organizational change. Bill Yasnoff does a particularly good job adding clarity to a muddled domain in a chapter on privacy, confidentiality, and security of Public Health Information. Those readers generally interested in PHI education, or with specific interest in developing training programs for PHI programs or for public health agency personnel would find great value in Janise Richard's chapter on core competencies.
The writing style is generally clear and illustrative, albeit not terribly concise. We have adopted this book as the core text for our graduate-level introductory course in PHI.
By Paul Fu Jr.
Very in depth coverage of PHIs. The book is a little short on algorithms and comprehensive coverage of databases. This book has a place in every Public Health Library and will be definitive for years to come. The second edition should be released in a couple of years.

While a bit redundant @ times, I found this to be an excellent treatment of cattle-raising. I am a novice to "cattle ranching" and have found it very useful and easily read; also, well indexed. A few "oldtimers" have found it very useful and have asked where they can get one. The practicality is enhanced by good illustrations.

I am a novice rancher who bought 37 calves at an auction. At one point I had 15 sick calves on my hands, primitive corrals, and the whole town laughing at me. Tonight, I can honestly say the worst is past. My brother and I doctored ten bad eyes, saved a bloat case, doctored a footrot immediately and effectively, and saved at least five extremely ill pneumonic calves, while vaccinating, branding, and eartaging the whole bunch. Without this book and the thorough, intelligent, and courageous instructions it gives to the cattleman, I would have lost a good part of my herd, all my joy for ranching along with them. As it is, the town isn't laughing anymore and starting to wonder where we came up with all those good ideas they're seeing popping up on our place.

It isn't medical school so much as the boom in Physiology majors and the required Anatomy & Physiology (A&P) class that has sent demand for this kind of flash card soaring. There are basically three competing versions of A&P cards readily obtainable today, and the first two cost about the same:

l) This one from Scientific Publishing, which uses more cards but smaller ones with smaller pictures;

2) The set from Barron's, which has fewer cards in the set but larger cards that are easier to read; and

3) The Netter series, adapted from medical-school flash cards. The set costs about 80 percent more but has the most cards AND the most detailed cards (and most likely the fewest errors).

If you can afford it, go with option 3) because a few dollars more is worth it for a fundamental class like A&P. If you can't, the other two card sets have their merits but my tendency is to go with 2) because the cards are just easier to read--both captions and illustrations--and that matters over time.

I ordered this for A&P and I love using them as a review. The box is big, but I take the cards out that are only for the section we are going through in class, and keep those in a ziploc bag in my purse or backpack to pull out when I have a few free minutes. They have saved me so much time because they are much better than any review tool I could have made myself. The cards are color coded, have space on the back of the card that contain notes and blank spots where you can write your own notes. I have had so many of my classmates ask me where I got these cards since they are so helpful. I would highly recommend these as an effective study aid for A&P courses.
