Ex-ci'-to-tox-in: a substance added to foods and beverages that literally stimulates neurons to death, causing brain damage of varying degrees. Can be found in such ingredients as monosodium glutamate, aspartame (NutraSweet®), cysteine, hydrolyzed protein, and aspartic acid.

Citing over five hundred scientific studies, Excitotoxins explores the dangers of aspartame, MSG, and other substances added to our food. This is an electrifying and important book that should be available to every American consumer.

It's weird how fate sometimes thrusts a book into your hands at just the right moment.
I was in New York and visited a bookstore, and was almost about to walk out when the title Excitotoxins caught my eye. I actually picked the book up thinking it would be about mycotoxins, which are found in mushrooms, and which some WHO scientists have identified as potential carcinogens.
However, upon opening Russell Blaybock's excellent book, I was surprised to find that it was in fact a mystery book - a book written by a neurosurgeon for the purpose of understanding how Parkinson's had struck down one of his parents.
As the son of two parents with Parkinson's, I was entralled by the book's premise - that common food additives could cause demonstrable health problems in sensitive individuals - and shocked that because these effects did not involve the whole population, such additives were deemed to be safe by the FDA. I was also shocked that manufacturers were given the right to add them to food under the guise of "spices", "natural flavoring" and other non de plumes.
When my parents first became ill, I did a large amount of research into Parkinson's and related illnesses. One of the more interesting aspects I came across was the discovery by some researchers that sebhoric dermatitis and Parkinson's may have a link. Being a recent sufferer of this annoying skin condition, my heart sunk on hearing this news.
However, since reading Excitotoxins I have made an effort to rid myself of any intake of the toxic additives mentioned in the book. It should come as no surprise that my skin problem has gone. My energy level has doubled.
I recently visited my parents and gave them a copy of this book.
It is almost a cliche in this day and age for someone to ask the waiter at a Chinese restaurant 'no MSG, please,' as is the waiter's knowing smirk in response. MonoSodium Glutamate (MSG), or 'The essence of taste' (as coined by the Japanese), is used as a 'taste-enhancer' in nearly every form of processed food on the market today, though 'taste addiction' may be a more correct term. But what exactly does it do? And how is it harmful?
Dr. Russell L. Blaylock answers these questions and poses some startling evidence as to the eventual consequences of a heavy MSG-diet in his book _Excitotoxins: The Taste that Kills_. In basic terms, MSG (and other, similar agents) pierces the blood-brain barrier and over-stimulates the neurons of a brain to a deadly degree. Habitual intake among animal experiments has shown the development of tumors, memory loss, and a whole host of neurodegenerative diseases as the end result of excess excitotoxin intake, including Alzhiemer's, Parkenson's, Lou Gerhig's etc.
Walk into any gas station in the United States (or grocery store, for that matter) and, upon close investigation, you will find that 75%-90% of the available food has been 'enhanced' to some degree by excitotoxins. The chemical agents are often disguised by such ambiguous terms as 'spice' and 'natural flavors' or, my personal favorite, 'hydrolyzed vegetable protein.' A consumer society must have consumer slaves to keep it functioning; MSG is the crack cocaine of the food industry...and it is legally perpetuated by slush-fund advocates and a pork-glutted FDA. As proven again and again, money talks, ... [you can finish the maxim for me].

I bought this for my modalities class, and it does a good job explaining all of the modalities and physiology behind them. There are nice summary boxes along the way that save you time if you can't read in depth before class. It also explains some of the controversies with each modality along the way, so it helps with decision making.
By N. M. Nash
I recommend this book to all therapist, both OT's and PT's. This book has lots of evidence based backing. I have been privilaged to meet one of the authors of this book at Uindy and I was also opportuned to read another book on modalities by the second author which I feel this is a better upgrade of the initial book. It is great book for both beginners and for experienced therapist and a well simplified book. Pls. all you therapist out there read this book and let your patients benefit from all the knowledge gathered in this book and make your patients recovery and response to intervention alot quicker. I sure you, you will feel and look smarter before your patients with the knowledge from this book.

Pediatric Anesthesia And Emergency Drug Guide

While all anesthetic and emergency drugs on the market are made for and administered to both adult and pediatric patients, their dosages and routes of administration are critically different. In the pediatric population, drug dosages are so specific, due to the child’s small body mass index, that each drug given is calculated to their specific kilogram weight. Pediatric Anesthesia and Emergency Drug Guide is the first book that discusses and lists the milligram per kilogram dose range of each drug. Designed as a quick index, the anesthesia care provider for a 21 Kg child can simply open the book to the 21 Kg page, and see all the common anesthetic drugs already calculated both in milligrams and actual cc’s to be drawn up for that specific weight, along with calculated intravenous fluids and endotracheal/LMA sizes as well as calculated emergency drugs, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation specific information including: chest compression to ventilation ratio, depth and rate of chest compression, synchronized cardioversion and defibrillation Joules, pulse check placement, and foreign body obstruction maneuvers.

This book is the BEST pediatric reference book that I have seen. It is designed to be a book for use in the OR and it excels at this. The individual tables are indexed by weight and the exact dosages are listed. It is simply superb and all you need for the peds set-up.
By C. Gilbert
This is one of the most practical, user-friendly resources available for CRNAs/SRNAs in the OR. It has been a life-saver for me as an SRNA when Pediatric cases were added to my room unexpectantly. It not only provides you with accurate, weight-based doses for the majority of medications you would give a pediatric patient, but it also gives you the calculated milliters for the drugs (check concentrations). Many CRNAs I have worked with have purchased this valuable resource after utilizing my copy. Add this to your OR bag...you will not be disappointed!

I am 66, an RN, former psych nurse, didn't think I needed to know much about marijuana. Never used it before. With 3 chronic conditions, I've always looked for safer alternatives to pharmaceuticals. This book is eye-opening abt the twisted history of prohibition and the latest scientific research that can make life so much easier for those with autoimmune and neurological disorders, acute & chronic. The stigma that has been perpetuated by politicians, law enforcers - esp the DEA, the government are so easily refuted by science. Science continues to be hidden, but it is exploding.

Many people associate it with counter culture. It holds so much more promise beyond that. I am angry that I am this old and am in the field of medicine but only now am finding this information. I think of so many people who could have relief and better health. I am furious at the political machinations that have kept the truth from the public and apparently the president and people who make drug laws. There needs to be a paradigm shift where science reigns. Older people in particular have the most to benefit from its use because they are usually the ones with several chronic diseases and pain. I think AARP needs to make the information known to their members.

If you are a parent, you need to read this book to keep up and inform your kids, rather than having a knee jerk reaction. I've told my kids I wish I'd had this info when they were young. It is important to get perspective when our society is steeped in alcohol use that causes diseases and kills. All proceeds of the book go toward medical cannabis research.
By A better world
This book is AWESOME! I bought it because I heard the author plug it on the NORML show live, but I needed it for two papers I was writing. This book has almost EVERYTHING you could ever want to know about cannabis from most of the professionals and experts out there. It's a good source for learning more about the plant's pharmacology and how it interacts with your body. The chapters are pretty diverse, some are pretty scientific, while others are more casual and entertaining, like the Tommy Chong interview. Holland did a fantastic job at putting this all together. If you have to write a paper on cannabis, BUY THIS BOOK. It has so many sources to draw from, and they're all neatly formatted so if you need to do a works cited you can just copy the them from the back of the book. I got this for $11 and it was probably worth at least $30 in my opinion. Very pleased with the book and Holland, I think all the proceeds are going towards cannabis research too.

As a nursing student, taking pharmacology for the first time I thought I would buy this guide to help me! Now as I am writing this after my pharmacology final I have come to the conclusion that this guide was useless to me! I opened it maybe once this semester. My suggestion is to not buy this guide unless mandated by your professor. The textbook that this guide goes with has and online study program that comes free with the book. I found that more helpful, and easier to use than this guide. My final conclusion is forgo this if your can and use the online study guide that comes with the text book instead.

Dr. Cutler tells it like it is. No cover-ups here like the one from the .... How do I know? My wife is extremely ill from dental amalgam poisoning for more than 20 years. She is seriously chronically poisoned. After so much lying from dentists and ignorance from medical doctors, here comes a good book that sheds light to one of the most insidious forms of sickness, mercury poisoning! Even after all mercury amalgams are replaced by safe composites, the next nightmare comes when trying to figure out how to get rid of the mercury already inside your brain, nervous system, kidneys, blood, etc from an already debilitated and compromised body.
Dr. Cutler says on page 54: "First, do no harm. Note: the DMPS challenge is not a legitimate diagnostic test since over half the population will give a positive result but most of them do not appear to have amalgam illness. In addition there is a high incidence of adverse drug reactions during it, including permanent disability and death. It should never be used. DMSA challenge tests that involve the administration of 500 mg - 3g of DMSA as a single dose are also dangerous and not diagnostic."
Dr. Cutler says on page 89: "Therapeutic approaches currently offered by some practitioners but which should NEVER be used include: DMPS by injection except when oral administration is contraindicated and dosage is low, DMPS or DMSA on any schedule not involving frequent administration of equal doses for at least several days in a row, EDTA chelation, or penicillamine in any form. Supplementary cysteine, glutathione, or a "high sulfur" diet, or chlorella should NOT be used. All of these "therapies" will be VERY HARMFUL to you."
Dr.
Mercury-containing "amalgam" fillings have been with us for 150 years, and have been the intermittent cause of vehement controversy for just as long. In the 1850s or 60s, for a while it was a crime to insert these fillings into human beings in parts of the United States. In the 1930s Alfred Stock, a brilliant chemist, wanted these fillings banned; various American dentists have urged the same since the 1970s. In Sweden they were banned until the European Union intervened. The use of mercury to treat syphilis, as was customary into the 1890s, is now a huge embarrassment; many of the "symptoms" attributed to syphilis are now known to have been due to the "treatment."

In various European countries, the medical fraternity acknowledges that mercury, being a liquid, slowly evaporates from these fillings. This is where things become complicated. Cutler adduces evidence from different journals that the ability to excrete mercury varies by more than a factor of 20 between humans; in other words, as in lactose intolerance, a minority of human beings can't tolerate an otherwise safe product. Even more counterintuitively, mercury poisoning, unlike most other intoxications, does not have a single set of symptoms, but rather at least 20 very different sets of symptoms. I was initially deeply skeptical of Dr. Cutler's claims, which are at odds with everything you hear from "mainstream" medical authorities. However, the more I delved into the established scientific facts, the more confirmation I found for his claims. As part of my quest to regain my health I obtained excerpts from a 1400 page post-doctoral thesis on the side-effects of amalgam fillings by a dentist who went on to post-doctoral studies at Harvard University.

For the purposes of studying for step 1s (which is what I bought them for), these cards are way too detailed. They give you more information than you need to know and are simply too much of a time sink to go through. You DO NOT need these cards to get the 240+/99 that everyone craves for the boards. I personally ended up using Lange's pharmacology cards and really love them.

If you are genuinely interested in pharmacology then these cards are comprehensive and wonderful to have. But lets be honest here. In an age of PDAs and laptops, you could google, epocrats, dynamed, etc drug information on your phone or computer faster than referring to these cards.

I got PharmCards for my pharmacology class and for step 1 of boards. I have found them very helpful so far. My one complaint is that they are very glossy so it's difficult to highlight or write your own notes on them without smearing ink everywhere. I've found that the Sharpie pens work best for underlining or adding notes. I like how key features such as mechanisms of action are illustrated on the back of the cards.

Unlike the previous reviewer, I think this book was EXCELLENT! I passed the Sept 2011 FPGEE with 117 and this was my primary source of preparation. As such, I have bought the one for the NAPLEX. It is definitely true that the book is not detailed -- and that is perfect for me as I don't need 50 pages in one chapter. The other books were way too bulky and provided way more than is needed for the FPGEE. There are some chapters which could use more details (eg. Pharmacokinetics) and the book doesn't have as many diagrams to illustrate points as it should. However, I can confidently say that there were so many answers on the exam that I was prepared for just by using this book. I would recommend buying this book, studying it two times and you will feel confident for teh exam. At taht point if there is one or even two chapters that you think you need more information on, then you can read up on those more..but that sure beats studying a big bulky overly detailed book.
By Tans
I just passed April 2012 exam and I used mainly this book. I agree that it lacks some diagrams and it is not very much detailed but from the questions i saw in the exam, i can say you dont need much details to answer them. I found that the clinical part was not very rich so I studied this part from the lippincott (Pharmacology).
I can say that I answered lots of the questions in the exam only from what I studied in this book. I highly recommend studying this book couple of times and studying the clinical part from the Lippincott and you should be ready for the exam.

I have been using Dr. Julien's text to teach Intro to Clinical Psychopharm for several editions now, and it just keeps improving. Not only is he dedicated to providing a balanced view of psychotropic medications--which can be rare in writings in this area--but he understands and emphasizes the need to balance any medication treatment with behavioral therapy or psychotherapy.

For teachers: if you are interested in adopting this text to teach a class, there are great online resources available, including images, powerpoint slides, and a test bank. I tend to use my own slides, but incorporate many of the book's figures, charts, and diagrams into lectures.

I tried Preston et al for a couple of years, but found it too simplistic for the graduate level. I know many other profs choose that one, and I would say I'm about 70-30 in favor of Julien.
Hope this helps

Of course every nursing program has a required or recommended drug guide for everyone in the program to purchase... our program selected a reputable, yet not so great drug guide that left me needing help and this one is everything that one wasn't but should have been! The funny part is, even though our program recommends that other one, this is the one they keep in the nursing skills lab...!... It has several great appendices and unlike with our recommended drug guide, this one is setup so that you can find both generic and brand name rather than having to look the med up by its generic name or classification.
By lucky_pez
I was impressed with this Drug Guide. The medications are in alphabetical (vs classifications) but by their generic name (from what our instructor states NCLEX is no longer using brand name meds). It is easy to follow, I like that it includes nrsg guidelines & family/pt teaching. I haven't purchased a drug guide since '09 but this version does not include "side effects" it only provides "adverse reactions". I'm happy with it either way. I'd buy it again.
