In tweleve-step groups they usually say something like "take what you need and leave the rest." I would suggest that non-borderline clients and the practitioners who help them follow that advice with this book. There is no need to erase us from the title of this book so that non-BPDs will feel less shame buying or using it. And there is no need to judge the exercises and handouts as overly simplistic. They are what they are. They were designed to help us (borderlines).

If you are not borderline, and do not have experience working with borderlines, you really don't know what we need. Marsha Linehan does. I'm not claiming that every example or every exercise in the book works for every borderline, but M.L. does not claim that either!

Many borderlines (including myself) were traumatized in early childhood and failed to learn basic skills at that age. Therefore, exercises that to the non-BPD sufferer seem designed for children, were actually designed for people who never had the chance to experience a normal childhood and learn the social skills that others learned as children.

I do agree with the reviewers who say that much of DBT is helpful for people with other diagnoses, and even people who are not mentall ill, but this manual is for US, and does not need to be changed. Those who are not a part of the target audience should use what they can, and leave the rest - without judgement.

Those practitioners who see the applicability of DBT to non-borderline patients should take the time to figure out what works and write new books with new therapies, based on DBT. That is what Marsha Linehan did. She took CBT as a framework and developed DBT for a specific population - people who suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder.

This is probably a good desk reference for a physician, but it is a poor instructional aide, and is full of errors and omissions of important information.

This is a 2000 page book, and goes into excruciating detail to the point where the grand scheme is lost. Moreover, the excruciating detail is not well explained, or starts out well explained and abruptly digresses before the explanation's conclusion. The cardiac action potential is one such example.

As an instructional aide, it is very poor. It is very difficult to learn from this book, and some explanations are wrong. As an example, an this book describes an inverse agonist as a type of regulatory ligand that stabilizes a receptor in its inactive form, which is incorrect. It should be described as a type of regulatory ligand that reduces activity below a receptor's basal rate.

There are numerous errors in page layout that affect the way the outline of the material is perceived. As an example, in the general principles section where the physiological receptors are presented, there is a nice table showing the various types of receptors. The body of the text does not unfold as expected. I will use an outline format as an analogy. A proper presentation would unfold as such:

I. Receptors
A. GPCR
B. ion-gated
C. nuclear receptor
D. etc
1. etc
a. etc

What we get instead is:

A. receptors
1. GPCR
B. ion-gated
I. nuclear receptor
C. etc
1. etc.
a. etc.

The headings are completely screwed up. Nuclear receptor looks like a new section in the chapter.

Also, the book goes back and forth between regular print and microscopic print in the body of the text.

If you are looking for the copy with the CD-ROM MAKE SURE it says CD_ROM in the description. I bought this under the assumption since it was a "new" book that the CD-ROM would come with it. Found out I was wrong. So now I have to spend more money to get the CD-ROM which is about $35. The book it's self is a pretty good book. Just don't get the wrong item.

This is required reading for a class I'm taking. The content is well organized. Language is friendly. Easy-to-understand illustrations and tables. Helpful self-tests and summaries are included with each chapter. The companion online module, Mastering A&P, is fantastic. There are a lot of planned redundancies between all the study aids, which I really appreciate; they help me identify what's most important.

I had the previous edition of this book and there were many sections where the explanation was not clear enough. Upon google searching, I discovered others were posting questions about the same passages on forums and asking for its clarification. This edition has resolved the ones I checked.

As others have stated, the pages total have increased and so has the number of images. Online you have access to the book as well and can download all the images of the book in one zip file. This book is almost perfect, except some minor mistakes with incorrect referencing of images and tables as if they weren't updated etc (I found 2 in the respo chapter so far). Also binding is a bit weak and it's cracking a bit from the inside, but that could be because I am using it so much.

Pro:
Numbers of pages increased.
More explanations/clarifications than before.
Online access to book (searchable), images, qbank, and errata.

Con:
A few minor typos.

Conclusion: This edition is a MUST, even if you had a previous one.

I have both the 3rd edition revised reprint and the 4th edition so this review it's mainly intended to highlight the differences between the two.

They're both excellent books and if you've ever read Goljan, you know what to expect. As for the differences:
1. The book is longer. By about ~150-200 pages. That may not be a good thing depending on the type of person you are and the review of pathology you want. But I find it a bit more comprehensive in explaining concepts.

What is in the additional pages? Most of the addition from what I can tell and according to Goljan's acknowledgments in the cover is "more high-yeild information and photographs than in previous editions." The pictures you'll notice right off the bat. There are several pictures in all corners better displaying things I had to google or reference in the past. Not really a game changer, but it makes the book feel more complete.

2. Most notable, the little blurbs he has an the sides that summarize high-yeild concepts have been increased by 1.5-2x fold. It's really good if you're like myself and go back to review those concepts to make sure you got what you wanted from chapter (and your professors in year 1 tested from those blurbs). But at the same time, they become too cluttered and in a way, they subtract rather than add.

Would I recommend an upgrade? Up to your style really. I own Harrison's and read that to reference things. I prefer a more dense and complete book so I really like the changes in 4th edition of this book. If you prefer shorter reviews and limited in time, maybe the 3rd is better for you? But then again, you'd be missing out on the pictures that highlight some of the pathology.

The only thing I'm sad about was that I had taken notes from watching relevant Pathoma videos during first year into Goljan's 3rd edition. But I was planning to rewatch the videos anyhow, so it's another way to review the material.

I found out slightly too late that the kindle edition does not have the access code for the online resources for practice questions. Also I agree completely with the previous review that the lack of page numbers makes it impossible to follow assigned reading and references. Please be aware the kindle edition will not work well for most nursing students, if not all. Amazon was gangster about the problem though - they refunded me and sent out the hard copy with free next day shipping. As long as it gets here tomorrow I will have time to study for my exam.
