I hardly ever keep my textbooks, but if there is one I would consider keeping, it's this one. The formatting is wonderful, and the margins are lined with quotes related to the material in that section. I found Myers' writing style to be very informative and easy to understand, and he managed to make everything interesting. (To explain, I usually dislike the history of things like psychology because I find it boring, but Myers had me reading the history of psychology in earnest.)

If you have a choice of textbooks, I would recommend this one. It may not be the cheapest one out there, but it was very helpful, and it came with free access to online materials. The only con I can think of is that some of the boxes with examples of concepts were a little distracting, but that is something I could easily get past.
By Leah F.
I hold several degrees, but it was this book that made me wish I was working on a Psych degree. Myers' book is interesting... it holds the reader's attention and makes you want to know more. I found myself wondering, "So, THAT"S why I behaved this way when such-and-such happened?"

I love to read... just about anything I can get my hands on, and when I am finished with a book, I give it away or donate it. Not this book. It is shelved in my permanent "keep" collection. If you ever thought about a career in psychology or clinical sociology, you really need to read this book.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells, taken without her knowledge, became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first immortal human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years.

If you could pile all HeLa cells ever grown onto a scale, they'd weigh more than 50 million metric tons - as much as a hundred Empire State Buildings.

HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bombs effects; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave.

Now, Rebecca Skloot takes us on an extraordinary journey, from the colored ward of Johns Hopkins Hospital in the 1950s to stark white laboratories with freezers full of HeLa cells; from Henriettas small, dying hometown of Clover, Virginia, a land of wooden slave quarters, faith healings, and voodoo, to East Baltimore today, where her children and grandchildren live and struggle with the legacy of her cells.

Henrietta's family did not learn of her immortality until more than 20 years after her death, when scientists investigating HeLa began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. And though the cells had launched a multimillion-dollar industry that sells human biological materials, her family never saw any of the profits. As Rebecca Skloot so brilliantly shows, the story of the Lacks family, past and present, is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of.

Wow. This book should be required reading for scientists and students of life. The true story of Henrietta Lacks and her family has finally been told, beautifully, in this book. The book encompasses science, ethics, and the story of a family who was terribly wronged in the pursuit of scientific research. I could gush about this book for pages but I'll try first to hit the main points of why this book is so remarkable in list form for the sake of brevity:

1. The author clearly developed a strong relationship with the Lacks family, which was absolutely critical to ensuring the story was told accurately and with the respect to Henrietta Lacks that was so deeply deserved.

2. The storytelling is amazingly moving despite the need to convey a lot of scientific information. It reads like fiction.

3. Ms. Skloot's research into the science is impeccable.

4. The book is FAIR. It presents the unvarnished truth, obtained DIRECTLY from as many prinicpal people involved in the story as is humanly possible. It would have been easier to simplify the story into heroes vs. villians, but Ms. Skloot deftly handles all sides of the story.

For some detail: I have worked with HeLa cells in the past, but did not know even the barest information about the story of Henrietta Lacks until a few years ago. It simply was not common knowledge, until a few less ethical folks released her name and medical records to the public. This obviously should not have been done without the express permission of the Lacks family, which Ms. Skloot obtained. In the past, others have not been as ethical. The book covers Ms. Lacks' early life, how her cells came to be harvested, and what happened to both the cells and her family afterward.
This is hand's down one of the best books I've read in years and I wish I could give it more stars. It is going to be difficult to capture exactly what makes this book so outstanding and so captivating, but I'm going to give it my best shot.

First of all I want to say I am STUNNED that this is the author's first book. She has poured ten years of her heart, soul, mind and her life in general in this book. What she has given birth to in that long period of labor is worthy of her sacrifice and honors Henrietta Lacks and her family.

Other reviews have given the outline of this amazing story. What I want to stress is that Ms. Skloot has navigated the difficult terrain of respecting Mrs. Lacks and her family, while still telling their story in a very intimate, thorough, factual manner. What readers may not know is that the Lacks family isn't just a "subject" that the author researched. This is a real family with real heartaches and real challenges whose lives she entered into for a very long season. The Lacks' family has truly benefitted from the author's involvement in their life and that is something I am very appreciative of. I believe that Ms. Skloot was able to give Henrietta's daughter, Deborah, a real sense of healing, deliverance, peace and identity that she had been searching for her whole life...that story alone would have made the book for me.

It would have been very easy for the author to come across as condescending or patronizing or possibly as being exploitive as she wrote about a family that is poor and uneducated.

First off, hands down I really benefited from the use of this drug guide. It was perfect for in class use as well as clinical use for nursing school. It truly is one of the most trusted names in drug guides (my grandmother still has her Davis's guide from when she was a practicing nurse.)

However, in regards to actually purchasing the book was a completely different situation. I have Amazon Prime, so I purchased the book that was Prime eligible. Mine happened to be sold by Amazon. I thought "this is great, I have Prime so I'll get it here in about 3 days." WRONG. Just because they say "2 day shipping" DOES NOT mean that you will get it any sooner...especially if they decide to wait 12 days before they ship it out!! All of my other books (10 books total) came within 3-4 days of purchase. But this was a nightmare, especially since I needed it right away. If I would have known that it would take Amazon 2 weeks to get my "Prime eligible" book to me, I would have paid a private seller more to get it to me in an appropriate time frame.

Davis' is hands down the best drug guide out there for nurses. I love the format of the book and how each drug monograph is written. in particular the "Nursing Implications" section for each drug is awesome and makes planning care and knowing what to focus in on so much easier.

This used to be a very good derm atlas. 2013 edition is an example of cost cutting by the publisher. The book "lost" almost 100 pages comparing with the previous edition: the pages are of cheap qulity, very difficult to flip through as pages are sticking together; pictures got smaller; text is difficult to read etc etc etc. This is sad...

If you're looking for a comprehensive resource for NCLEX prep, look no further...this book is fantastic. Extensive topic coverage complete with rationales for every response. Prefer going online to take quizzes? No problem this book's got that, too. (Although the content online is a tad bit confusing to navigate, once you figure out how to get to the quizzes section, you won't forget.) I have several books for review and this one is my personal favorite. Some of my professors loan this text out to students, but I prefer 24/7 availability in my own home! :-) Happy studying, future nurses!

UPDATE: I saw sooo many reviewers having trouble getting to the online content to take system-specific quizzes that I decided to post instructions here on how to get to the right place.

1) Go to the Pearson Pegasus log-in page once you've set up online access, and log in.
2) Click on the book title on the left side of the website.
3) On the next page, on the left side near the top, you will see a menu bar that has the following options: "Today's View, Course Content, Grades, Communicate". Look just BELOW this menu bar and you will see the following options: "View All Content, Course Calendar, Learning Objectives."
4) Click on Learning Objectives.
5) On the left side, you will see the following options: "Client Need, Topics Areas, Integrated Process."
6) To take quizzes related to your system or topic of choice, click the plus sign for "Topics Areas".
7) Click on your system of choice.
8) On the right side, there are several options for that topic of study. Scroll down to the bottom-ish. You will see a heading called "Self Study" for that topic of study. Click on it.
9) A separate pop-up window will appear so that you may begin your quiz.
