What's so exciting about MAP is that it's easy to learn and it's free. There are no workshops to take, you can do it yourself, that means you don't have to find a practitioner who works with energy, and that means you don't have to pay a practitioner for weekly visits. Everything is right here in this book, and rarely have I found a book of this type that is so well written and clearly organized. The first few chapters give you an explanation of the process and the steps for a MAP session, so you can read about 50 pages and get started right away. After that, she goes into a deeper explanation of what happens in a session, then the rest of the book is devoted to specialized topics that you can read as you need them, such as surrogate sessions, calibration, MAP for animals, flower essences, and kinesiology, plus a few others.
Basically, MAP is a medical program where you work with energy beings (my term, not hers) and nature intelligences. In your first session you'll assemble a team that will be your specific team for as long as you use MAP. Machaelle describes it like this: "MAP is a physical program that works on your well-being from the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual perspective.....it works on strains, pressures, pain, and conflict felt on all these levels simultaneously." It takes a commitment to keep doing MAP, but it's not hard to learn. She suggests twice a week sessions at first, then once a week (each session takes under an hour) and she suggests you stick with it for five months before evaluating whether it's working for you. I could not believe my good fortune when I first learned about MAP.
I've found MAP to be an incredible, unique, effective method of healing, and a gift to the world. It requires a good degree of open-mindedness to get started, and one of the greatest drawbacks of using MAP is that -- though you may be excited and amazed by what the program does for you -- it may be difficult to talk about with your friends without them thinking you're crazy. I remain skeptical and agnostic about *how* this works. I don't know whether there really is such an entity as the Overlighting Deva of Healing (though I'm fascinated with such questions). I don't know if Machaelle Small Wright's explanation of what happens during the program is, in fact, what's really happening. All I know is that this program has worked and benefited me in a very real, powerful, concrete way. For me that's all that matters.
I myself am at a loss for how to recommend this to people, because had I discovered this book on my own, I would have thought it was too weird to ever work. However, when my Reiki teacher told me how it had worked for her, I decided to give it a chance. I'm glad I did. When I first started working with MAP, I thought to myself in amazement, "This is so much more powerful than Reiki ever was for me!" I'm so lucky to have a support system like this.
If I want to share the wonder that is MAP with others -- and I'll only tell those who I think can handle it -- I usually tell them: 1.) I don't know HOW it works; I just know that it does. 2.) Read all the five star reviews on Amazon.com. The one reviewer who gave it fewer than five stars -- W. Lambdin, who gave it three -- probably already had his (her?) mind made up, and didn't approach it with an open mind.
