What it is:
1. A superficial, broad, magazine like style of writing and content
2. Really 2 books. First 1/2 a completely generic computer introduction, the other 1/2 on healthcare IT

First 1/2 of the book has nothing to do with healthcare IT. It is a generic introduction to computers and Information technology. Not badly done but it is so broad it serves better as a silly reminder to the IT savvy than something that would be really useful to learn anything from. Probably useful for someone mildly literate in computers but wants a quick brush up on terms and concepts of computing in general. Why this material is in this book seems weird to me.

The second half of the book is more health care related and is about the same level and style of broad brush treatment. Again useful for someone interested in a fast exposure to the basics or reminder of healthcare related subjects. It reads like a newspaper or magazine style where you just touch on a variety of points. Good if you want that superficial exposure and a read once and then throw away type of experience.

Why get it:
You won't learn much from this book, but you'll be exposed to the terms and concepts in a very high level way if that is what you seek. Would have made more sense as two different books with names like 'Computers 101' and 'Healthcare IT 101' for a high school level or magazine level introduction to the subjects.

That said, the writing is clean and easy to understand, the pictures simple and but not useful. A very digestible book but very unfulfilling.

Healthcare informatics was a very useful book for my work. It's not a book aimed at the advanced informatics practitioner, it's aimed at the person trying to tie everything together - more of a starter's book. If you're expecting deep wisdom, this isn't your book. If you're looking for the basics to start with, start here. Very well written. The vendor from whom I purchased had it at my door in less time than it took to complete the order. Thanks!
