Doctors: Human Rights Violations By American Psychiatrists," Dr. Ross provides proof, based on 15,000 pages of documents obtained from the C.I.A. through the Freedom of Information Act, that there have been pervasive, systematic violations of human rights by American psychiatrists over the last 65 years. As well, he proves that the Manchurian Candidate "super spy" is fact, not fiction. He describes the experiments conducted by psychiatrist to create amnesia, new identities, hypnotic access codes, and new memories in the minds of experimental subjects.

The funding of the experiments by the C.I.A., Army, Navy and Air Force is proven by the C.I.A. documents and the doctors' own publications. "The C.I.A. Doctors" proves that there were extensive violations of human rights by psychiatrists in North America throughout the second half of the twentieth century, perpetrated not by a few renegade doctors, but by leading psychiatrists, psychologist, pharmacologists, neurosurgeons and medical schools. The stated aim of THE CIA DOCTORS by Colin Ross is an excellent and much-needed one: "to prove that the Manchurian candidate is fact, not fiction..." and that "the creation of controlled disassociation was a major goal of mind control research." (p. 10) As he says, he is not a conspiracy theorist and had no axe to grind against the CIA: his concern is that his fellow psychiatrists, including some of the most prestigious individuals and institutions in the country, have violated and are violating their Hippocratic oath by their participation in such experiments. There is however one major problem with the book. It was originally written in 2000, and although Dr. Ross revised it in 2006, he did not add any new material to speak of. Thus the connection between the experiments carried out by the CIA during the Cold War and the treatment of detainees in the so-called "War on Terror" is not made explicit, as it is in Alfred McCoy's A QUESTION OF TORTURE. Yet the similarity between the way that "Manchurian candidates" were created during the Cold War and the way that terrorist suspects are being treated today is alarming.

Take for example, Mohammed Al Qahtani, one of the "Guantánamo Six" on trial for his life under the Military Commissions Act of 2006. Mr. Al Qahtani is one of the few terrorist suspects who have been permitted civilian lawyers, in this case from the progressive Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR). A CCR information paper on Al Qahtani lists the abuses to which he has been subjected, in a manner which is at times confusing. For instance, he is described as being subjected to "forcible administration of numerous IVs during interrogation.
Any time a person writes a book about the CIA's (and other federal agencies') use of unethical mind-control on citizens; that author automatically risks being attacked from at least four different directions.

First, the author risks attacks on his or professional credibility.

Next more subtle attacks are made on the author's person, and sometimes on his or her family and closest colleagues.

Next come even more cowardly attacks: because perpetrators cannot afford to expose their involvement, they use third parties to write scathing attacks against the author and book to try to convince others it isn't worth reading.

Finally, the author is attacked by survivors who are understandably concerned that the book doesn't cover the entire spectrum of Extreme Abuse.

We need to understand that it's simply not possible to write a single book that effectively connects the dots between all the horrific atrocities, abuses, and human rights violations that have been committed by perpetrators of Extreme Abuse. Beyond that, it is not fair for us to expect any author to fight our battles for us. We must learn to fight them for ourselves.

For this reason, we probably need to write many more books to effectively educate the public about the entire spectrum of horrors, atrocities and human rights violations that the victims and survivors have suffered.

For years, Dr. Ross has worked hard to compile information about C.I.A. mind control and the psychological abuse of U.S. and Canadian citizens. All of his books have been objective and well-documented.
